Well, if an ex-Clinton advisor says it, it must be true. Oh the statement is "may", so there's really no story here because you can never be wrong with a "may".

[–] protist@mander.xyz 31 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Paul Begala is as "Democratic insider" as you can get, and is also an insufferable talking head. The point of getting a message like this out there is to undermine public perception of the Trump/Vance ticket more than anything

In response to Newsweek's request for comment on Begala's prediction, Trump/Vance campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said that "there's a reason Paul Beluga [sic] no longer gets paid for his political advice."

Lol

While Haley might have a broader appeal to undecided voters than Vance, her status as the last Republican to mount a primary challenge against Trump, when the former president often referred to her as "birdbrain," may make the scenario unlikely.

Lmao

[–] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 8 points 3 months ago (2 children)

I understand what he gets out of it, I don't understand why someone at Newsweek decided to be his megaphone. There are plenty of functional stories about Vance's bad positions, hypocrisy, or poor favorability that do the same thing based on information rather than being a stenographer for someone without any real importance or special knowledge. If that's the story they wanted to write, they very easily could do it, instead they just summarized an already worthless interview.

These insider ghouls just can't die.

How dare you question the journalistic integrity of...Newsweek?

Newsweek has been vapid and awful for a long time my man. A better question to ask would be why did OP choose to link Newsweek here

But, it's Newsweek! There's no more reputable source than that!

[–] LEDZeppelin@lemmy.world 63 points 3 months ago (1 children)

He will still call her birdbrain on stage and Nikki will suck it up

[–] DogPeePoo@lemm.ee 19 points 3 months ago (1 children)

No spine Nikki bootlicking Haley

Another vp who hates him and flipped their position to get some power.

[–] expatriado@lemmy.world 30 points 3 months ago (1 children)

i think if we go back to 2015, all high rank Republicans hated Trump

[–] zigmus64@lemmy.world 23 points 3 months ago (1 children)

And many of them still do. It’s a weird useful idiot/political survival thing. He’s their useful idiot to get what they want… but they better play by the new rules, lest they get Penced.

[–] theangryseal@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

My imagined conversation when Vance was chosen as VP:

“I liked how it sounded, Trump-Pence. It’s too bad he’s a traitor. It had a nice ring to it, everybody said so. Do we have a Spence? Maybe a Dense?” “Mr. President, the closest I see is Vance.” “Trump-Vance. I like it. It’s close don’t you think? He’s said some nasty, nasty things about me. But, Trump-Vance? I like it. He’s saying good things now, isn’t he? He’ll do the right thing, he knows what happened when the last guy didn’t do the right thing. He wrote a book, they’re telling me nobody is reading it. Everybody still reads Art of the Deal, imagine that? Vance, Pence, Vence, Pence, we should say it like that. I like it.”

[–] mercano@lemmy.world 31 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Sure, just remember, if you change who’s on the ticket after the convention, you can’t really complain if the Democrats complain who’s on the ticket before theirs.

[–] whostosay@lemmy.world 17 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

They will forget, because fox news is going to upload their only current political memory every day at 6pm.

[–] DoucheBagMcSwag@lemmy.dbzer0.com 27 points 3 months ago (2 children)

God if Nikki declines him that would be FRESH

[–] aramova@lemmy.world 17 points 3 months ago

She's the queen of doublethink, shell accept to be his VP for the power and praise how large his mushroom is and how every woman should embrace his masculine alpha musk or some equally bullshit announcement.

[–] BeanSwellington@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Where would she get the spine for that?

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 25 points 3 months ago (3 children)

Having no principles undermines her only appeal. The moment she accepts a trump VP offer is the moment she lights any remaining credibility she has on fire.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 23 points 3 months ago

Yeah that's gone a be a very small fire. So I suppose no worries there.

[–] barsquid@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

What is this "remaining credibility" you speak of?

…Democrats had already "set a precedent" by changing their ticket.

Lol! No they didn’t. That’s like saying I already set a precedent by changing my dinner plans before I committed to a dinner place.

Also, dude - you can’t even decide who your VP is, how can anyone expect you to make actual decisions? I’m not voting for him anyway, but my question still stands.

[–] Plopp@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago (3 children)

Also, dude - you can’t even decide who your VP is, how can anyone expect you to make actual decisions?

You think they care? In a first past the post system like that with only two viable parties you could have Jesus himself vs actual Hitler and it would still be close to 50/50.

I'm glad Trump is ONLY choosing Candidates who have Spines and Values!

[–] conditional_soup@lemm.ee 19 points 3 months ago (3 children)

Too bad Donald Trump won't replace Donald Trump. I'd prefer if he picked a real anti-government type, like Commander Biden.

[–] Drusas@kbin.run 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)
[–] conditional_soup@lemm.ee 5 points 3 months ago

No shit, I'd vote for Commander and Major Biden in a heartbeat.

Paul Begala- the guy who sat there nodding along with everything Jon Stewart said as he berated both him and Tucker Carlson on Crossfire. Just totally aware of how awful he was.

[–] Curious_Canid@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Thank you for bringing up a happy memory.

Guess that's why she doesn't like that a whole bunch of her supporters are now supporting Harris.

[–] protist@mander.xyz 5 points 3 months ago

Unfortunately for her, a whole bunch of her supporters supported her because they hate Donald Trump.

[–] fmstrat@lemmy.nowsci.com 14 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Oh no, I'm up against a woman now! However will I win? Oh, I know!

He would probably become president if he had chosen Haley but there is just zero percent chance he acknowledges he was wrong. This is a Democrat making up theories, not a leak familiar with his thinking.

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 14 points 3 months ago

I genuinely thought this would've been his pick to begin with.

But even if he does, I think it can only backfire. Remember, the vast majority of sexist scum fall under the MAGA banner. Doing that shows Trump is weak to those same people and now he begins pulling away from his own base.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 12 points 3 months ago (2 children)

I have no idea whether that's a good strategic response to a Harris/Kelly ticket, but speaking personally, I find Nikki Haley more-appealing than I do J.D. Vance, so I suppose it'd appeal to at least some voters.

[–] Coffee_Addict@lemmy.world 13 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

For this reason, I would much, much rather JD Vance stay on the ticket.

Nikki Haley… I think she could so some damage to Harris’s election chances. It’s gonna be a tough fight to win this November, and Haley is much more palatable to moderates than JD Vance is.

This would just further illustrate the futility and ornamental nature of the 2 party system and the way the parties nominate candidates.

[–] InternetUser2012@lemmy.today 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Talk about dumb shit. Go for it, idiot.

[–] RestrictedAccount@lemmy.world 9 points 3 months ago (1 children)

She is good. This would help him.

I don’t like it, but it would help him.

[–] geekwithsoul@lemm.ee 7 points 3 months ago

It might help with the swing voters - which evidently somehow still exist, but it would make a bunch of the MAGA base stay home on Election Day.

[–] FanciestPants@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Wasn't it Don Jr that convinced his dad to pick Vance? Not that I think Trump concerns himself much with his family, but he's going to have to throw someone under the bus for the decision to go with Vance in the first place. Don Jr might have to go back to being 5th favorite child.

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I refuse to believe Trump values his children's opinions that much

[–] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 months ago

There's the one he pretends to listen to trying to get into her pants.

[–] Subverb@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago

It it happens, Trump will make Vance withdraw to save face and Vance will probably do it to stay in Trump's good graces.

That will backfire, of course, because he'll turn on Vance and start calling him a loser as he does with everyone that he throws overboard.

[–] NoiseColor@startrek.website 7 points 3 months ago

It might make sense to pick a woman against kamala, but what would be the optics of the change. Plus haley would not do it if things started to look bleak for trump, which they already are a bit.

[–] bradorsomething@ttrpg.network 5 points 3 months ago

I hear the Ghost of Lincoln is available.

[–] Yawweee877h444@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

Fucking LOL. What a clusterfuck.

[–] fox2263@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

I dare say he would just to claw some women voters. I’m surprised he didn’t do it in the first place.

I’m actually more surprised he doesn’t just install Jnr as his VP so there can be two Trumps in office.

[–] werefreeatlast@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

This is the second post today where I'm just impressed with the person's teeth. In the last post someone mentioned dentures. It probably applies here too. But not much more difference. Nikki seemed half decent but then showed us her true boot licking colors. Plus she wears more mascara than Bens.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 3 points 3 months ago

"There's a nonzero chance the Republicans take their vice presidential candidate off the ticket," Begala said. "He's been a dud. He's the first vice presidential nominee of either party since 1980 to begin underwater in his approval ratings."

At least going off their portraits here, Vance is also the only Vice President (well, potential Vice President, in his case) to have a beard, other than Schuyler Colfax under Grant in 1869.
