Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious right or left wing sources will be removed at the mods discretion. We have an actively updated blocklist, which you can see here: https://lemmy.world/post/2246130 if you feel like any website is missing, contact the mods. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted seperately but not to the post body.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source.

Posts which titles don’t match the source won’t be removed, but the autoMod will notify you, and if your title misrepresents the original article, the post will be deleted. If the site changed their headline, the bot might still contact you, just ignore it, we won’t delete your post.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials or celebrity gossip is allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis.

7. No duplicate posts.

If a source you used was already posted by someone else, the autoMod will leave a message. Please remove your post if the autoMod is correct. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners.

The auto mod will contact you if a link shortener is detected, please delete your post if they are right.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Hmm far fewer comments on Lemmy this morning lol. Poor IT folks... I'm sorry.

[–] return2ozma@lemmy.world 34 points 3 months ago (3 children)

It sucks so bad. Today I learned a lot of users don't know the difference between forward slash and backslash.

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 14 points 3 months ago (4 children)

I coded for 15 years and I still don't.

[–] MeekerThanBeaker@lemmy.world 20 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Forward Slash... / ...leans forward.

Back Slash... \ ...leans back.

[–] Brickhead92@lemmy.world 11 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Or is it

Back Slash... / ...because the bottom is back.

Forward Slash... \ ...because it's forward at the bottom.

/s

[–] Repelle@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago

I had it backwards for a really long time because you draw / from front to back (ie you write it in a backwards direction) I thought that was the back slash. That still feels right to me despite being wrong.

[–] randompasta@lemmy.today 3 points 3 months ago

In the old days of using UNC paths a lot we found ourselves saying whack whack server name whack share name. Then forward slash was just slash.

[–] BleakBluets@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago

I always remember the difference by imagining them as lines on a graph. Forward slash is the line with positive slope and backslash is the one with negative slope.

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 3 months ago

So damn easy to mix them up

[–] papertowels@lemmy.one 3 points 3 months ago

I was going to say.... I just call them Linux/windows slashes, but idk forward vs back

[–] Empricorn@feddit.nl 12 points 3 months ago

Is that the squiggly one?

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago

lol ouch. I luckily never updated my laptop so I dodged the bulk of it lol.

I'm in IT, I am not affected but will express my sympathy in between handfuls of popcorn!

[–] sunzu@kbin.run 5 points 3 months ago

don't they all live for this day?

ie fixing bad decisions made by some corpo clown 4 years ago to save 25 cents on something?

[–] blackluster117@possumpat.io 24 points 3 months ago

When being let go from your Sysadmin job a few months ago is a blessing in disguise.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.world 16 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I work nights, we were the first people in the company to experience the outage lol we left IT a "sorry for the chaos" note

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 13 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Hahaha.

"Tally-ho chaps. Sincerest apologies for the chaos. Chin up.

rockSlayer"

Bet you slept like a log.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.world 9 points 3 months ago

My Ti-89 also appears to be uneffected.

[–] lmaydev@lemmy.world -3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

You because no big companies are using it hehe

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago

Every big company uses it. You'll find Red Hat at nearly all Fortune 500 companies somewhere.

[–] nucleative@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Happy I'm not in IT anymore.

One of my first major outages was caused by the iloveyou.vbs virus that emailed itself to your contact list. It brought our exchange server to its knees in minutes and took quite a while to clean up.

Nobody really understood at the time that attachments could be dangerous.

[–] werefreeatlast@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

So is this what was making my teams show me as away? I kept trying to make it green and shit but it wouldn't change.

[–] FelixCress@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Still waiting for "updates good" crowd to weight in.

[–] lmaydev@lemmy.world 12 points 3 months ago (1 children)

It was a 3rd party update and you absolutely should keep your systems updated.

There you go 🙂

[–] b000rg@midwest.social 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)
