Definite green flag for the video. Red flag for the girl, because who the fuck asks about that?

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 107 points 6 months ago (1 children)

It's not the worst idea to see if someone you're interested in generally aligns with your interests and hobbies and isn't one of those "hidden" right wing nut cases

[–] Jomega@lemmy.world 49 points 6 months ago (6 children)

YouTube's algorithm is garbage though, so that information is worthless. Pretty sure it pushes right wing stuff on anyone remotely interested in politics regardless of affiliation. As for me, my watch history is off, so that isn't possible in the first place.

[–] itstoowet@lemmy.world 28 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I think they flagged me as a gun ~~nut~~ enthusiast because my feed is literally nothing but gun videos. I am American but live in Europe; one of the reasons I moved here is because of the lack of guns!

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 19 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Maybe YouTube thinks you're homesick?

[–] synae@lemmy.sdf.org 10 points 6 months ago

Probably misses their old guns

Oh God, for a while YouTube kept trying to give me right wing videos. You watch one tool review from someone you never heard of before, and all of a sudden, you start getting trad wife videos. Had to install a 3rd party channel blocker to deal with it.

Twitter feels a hardcore far-right recommendation engine. YouTube thinks I’m OK, and want to watch Technology Connections (correct) and Colbert (correct).

It isn't a good test, because YouTube algorithms are shitty. For example, I disagree with Ben Shapiro probably 90% of the time and think he's an odious troll, but because I watched him in a debate once, YT pushed videos of him for months after.

[–] Klear@lemmy.world 43 points 6 months ago (2 children)

It's actually a hidden test - she doesn't care about the recommendations but wants to see if you're using ReVanced.

[–] Transporter_Room_3@startrek.website 13 points 6 months ago (1 children)

"I use ReVanced"

goosebumps

I didn't even watch him, I watched videos very obviously and openly critical of his horseshit. YouTube's response is to recommend direct videos from many of these fascist sucklers.

[–] GluWu@lemm.ee 8 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (3 children)

I use YouTube specifically to dive into the right wing conservative anti-science rabbit hole. I think it important to understand how many of those people there are and what they believe. I also find it extremely entertaining, in a "this is incredibly sad" kind of way. I have fox news and evolution debunking videos in my recommendations.

For those that don't know this actually could have happened. The idea of Big Bird being on the Challenger was floated around by the big wigs.

I genuinely don't know how a potential date would react to this lol

I got an email from Youtube about 11 years ago that simply said: "the algorithm has abandoned you."

And now whenever I go there all I get is a weird orange and green moire pattern.

Get really into videos of open network accessible security cams set to experimental dark ambient. Then fullow their creators down into Umbral Youtube and it's videos of tidepool cams, paracausal physics discussions and Saint Seiya AMVs set to Chilean Poetry literature class lecture notes.

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 35 points 6 months ago (2 children)

I would probably counter with "you wanna see my subscriptions instead? cuz I don't fucks with no recommendations" and then she'd just walk away because she probably wasn't even talking to me in the first place

Joke's on them; I disabled history a long time ago, so YouTube can't recommend things to me now.

[–] Sylvartas@lemmy.world 20 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Hello, fellow "fuck you and your privacy settings" homepage enjoyer.

Seriously though, it makes me quite irrationally angry that they still have this shitty passive aggressive message on the homepage years after. Just give me my subscriptions feed instead ffs.

Fuck that. I’ve already got a hard enough time dating while not using Instagram and Facebook. Shits gone too far. I fall asleep every night to Battlefield series of WW2 documentaries

[–] Hello_there@fedia.io 21 points 6 months ago (4 children)

Actually a red flag. Like at least 25% chance they're a neonazi

[–] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.world 14 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (4 children)

yeah right. Have you watched that series? It’s like the greatest ww2 documentary series ever made for history lovers imo. It’s one of the few that goes into full detail about the eastern front. I put on other documentaries too though, just have to search for those that have calm deep voice that’s the right speed and I’m out in minutes. Better than everything else I’ve tried for insomnia

[–] kbin_space_program@kbin.run 15 points 6 months ago

The series itself might not be a red flag, but I suspect that the recommendations from that might be because Google is stupid.

My YT recommendations are full of game lore and Warhammer 40K. I don't care about either, but Youtube really, really wants me to.

I get to play this YouTube game with students every time me or one of them play a clip as part of a presentation, assuming we're logged in (and we often are, as students and myself use Google Drive).

For me, I simply reveal my love of video games (and since having kids, slews of kid music) but for them it's a wild mix of ASMR, make up videos, musical tastes, and so on. Nothing too crazy yet, but its only a matter of time.

I'm grateful I at least have the foresight to use burner accounts for things like watching cringy movies (I listen to podcasts that make fun of them, so that's a thing). It'd be pretty funny if something like Pandemic 3 popped up in my feed, haha.

Hypothetical:

The app isn't installed on my phone so they go to browser instead, page takes a moment to load because of VPN, YT either asks to log in or it asks to turn on watch history in order to get recommendations.

I know from the get-go I'm either getting rated really really highly or really low, or that the reviewer will be dumbfounded. What do you think?

That would have been the weirdest tangent on a Wikipedia page. Jim Henson, Muppets, Sesame Street, retired characters, Big Bird oh was that an early version of Abelardo?, Challenger shuttle dis-- what. What? What the fuck?!

When the guy who played Mr. Hooper died, they worked that into the show. The cast, sincerely grieving, had to explain to a seven-foot-tall canary that he wasn't coming back. That's not really he same kind of intrusion from reality, as acknowledging the same giant fowl fucking exploded on national television.

The only possible comparison would be if some show had a gimmicky live episode that happened to be scheduled for 9 AM, on a Tuesday, in September of 2001.

Speaking of, not the child focused Sesame Street, but they accidentally made it canon that in the Muppets universe whether or not Kermit the Frog exists somehow determines whether or not 9/11 happens. 2002's "A Very Muppet Christmas" is an "It's a Wonderful Life" style movie where Kermit temporarily wishes himself out of existence and is allowed to observe the resulting timeline. Shots of the Manhattan skyline in the main universe show no Twin Towers as expected, but there's a shot that clearly shows them in the background outside alternate Piggy's window. Accidental because the set designer or whoever just didn't notice them in the old still used for that window, but the implication is hilarious
