Rules (2024-08-30)
- This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
- No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
- Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
- No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
- Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
- If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
- Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
- Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
- No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
(This list may get expanded when necessary.)
We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.
If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.
If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @federalreverse@feddit.org, @poVoq@slrpnk.net, or @anzo@programming.dev.

I'm sorry, what are you expecting?
Expecting? I was expecting exactly what we both see. No debate of substance is permitted on this subject. You know that already.
If comments like "all muslims are bad" are a good start to a "debate of substance" in your view, I don't actually mind you not participating.
This straw man says more about you than any argument I have ever made here.
Huh? You were complaining about how evil mods were suppressing debate (paraphrasing obviously).
But the removed comment thread literally started with a blanket "muslims are bad" comment.
Difficult to know that. The offending comment is deleted.
But yes, given the number of deleted comments, the mods are almost certainly suppressing debate.
Whichever way you look at it, that is not a healthy situation in democracy.
Hi, I am the mods responsible.π And yeah, I am deleting comments if they are just inciting hate, are obviously racist, etc. Unfortunately, a topic such as this one attracts these kinds of opinions. And no, for the sake of everyone's well-being, I am not just letting them stand.
You can look at the modlog if you want: https://p.feddit.org/modlog?community=5765
Eh. What's truly not healthy is absolute free speech. That just helps the most extreme voices thrive.
Your work is appreciated.
Thanks!
Thank you, handling these subjects is already annoying at family dinners. I can't imagine handling this on an online forum.
If we're talking about democracy in general, I'd say that is a open question. The far-right problem is worse in speech-controlled Europe than in the First Amendment USA. Anyway, that's not the subject here.
But of course any private community has the right to police its members' speech. No denying that. Didn't know about the open modlog. Useful innovation.
You sure about that? Last time I looked nobody was openly advocating ending elections in Europe and enjoying support from nearly half of the population.
It's also a false narrative. Public speech is usually moderated in both the US and the EU.
Extremism blooms way more often when speech isn't moderated well. The UK being taken over by people who read/wanted to believe (Russia-sponsored) fake news on Twitter is a recent example.
Hahahaha do you get your European news from Fox network lmao
I would agree if the mods were to actually delete comments calling for e.g. stricter immigration laws or quicker deportations of rejected asylum seekers. This didn't happen here and what was deleted wasn't a contribution to discussion but generalising bs.
Feel free to contribute to the discussion with your own points of view. Those can be controversial without violating the community rules.
Fair enough. It's possible I misjudged. Perhaps I could say what I really think here, after all!
But that was really my point. Looking at the state of the discussion - most of the comments deleted, and the rest mostly on one side of the debate (the correct-thinking side, the side which is a minority in opinion polls of the general public), I didn't feel I wanted to risk wasting my time writing a contribution that would be deleted. Or find myself attacked for being a hateful bigot, which I am not. Nor did I want to self-censor in order to avoid all that.
This is the unhealthy democratic situation I referred to. Like it or not, it's playing out on a small scale in this forum.
There's only one way to find out.
I'm all in for disrupting bubbles here and there to prevent too strong biases from building. And sure, I guess you'll collect a bunch of downvotes for your opinions. But as long as you stick to the rules, those comments should stay there, no matter the downvotes.
You seem to be whining a lot (typical right wing thing to do) and bring up democracy and being wrongly called a bigot and blabla, but this is an online messaging board, you donβt have to comment here.
Youβre free to go to any other place. Also, the mods donβt have to leave your comment up because freedom of speech is a thing in countries, not privately run message boards.
You complain about not being able to express yourself yet your comments are up here. If a comment gets deleted, thereβs a mod log.
