I am a participant of the iPadOS 18 beta, and out of all the Apple Intelligence features, the only one I actually like to use is to summarise web pages. Some journalists love to yap, I guess...

AI is like the office worker who's the nephew of the CEO. They're never going to go away, but can be useful for tedious work, so long as someone checks behind them.

This is a good analogy, and is one big reason I won’t trust any AI until the ‘answers’ are guaranteed and verifiable. I’ve worked with people who needed to have every single thing they worked on double-checked for accuracy/quality, and my takeaway is that it’s usually faster to just do it myself. Doing a properly thorough review of someone else’s work, knowing that they historically produce crap, takes just about as long as doing the work myself from scratch. This has been true in every field I’ve worked in, from academia to tech.

I will not be using any of Apple’s impending AI features, they all seem like a dangerous joke to me.

I wouldn't use it for anything factual, I use it to either brainstorm, analyse smth I've written, find patterns, themes or structures within my writings.

Its a great tool to help write I find. I often used a site that offered rhyming words, now i use chat gpt.

Don't expect anything unique and original and don't expect it to be correct or coherent. It will "misunderstand" a lot.

I’ve been enjoying the summaries for notifications. It has been absolutely wrong though which scares me. It’s happened twice where it messed up the subject of the conversation. Even though it screwed it up I still love the feature.

The summarizing calls is really really cool but it will take some awkward conversations to record calls to get the transcript. I used it to transcribe and summarize calling my insurance company.

The cleanup feature in photos is very coool, especially because it can know what’s foreground background if you wanted to just cleanup the bg.

All that being said, they really need a lot of work.

It's still in beta after all, but once it's polished, I can imagine myself using these daily

Jesus christ, how lazy are you?

In general, the GenAI tools are good for only making changes to existing text or summarising it. They're not good at the "generating" part of it 😂

I wish it worked on more webpages. But totally agree.
