Why am I getting spam text messages trying to confirm I live in my phone's area code?

I’m used to the usual “remember me” text messages, but is there a reason they are trying to include the metro area in the message as well?

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.
