Donald Trump and his Republican allies have repeatedly claimed that the Democrats are planning to get illegal immigrants to vote in the US election.

“Our elections are bad, and a lot of these illegal immigrants coming in, they’re trying to get them to vote,” Trump said during the presidential debate with Kamala Harris.

BBC Verify has identified more than 100 paid-for ads on Facebook and Instagram posted by Republicans since the start of September focusing on the issue.

It is illegal for a non-US citizen to vote in a national election, but studies suggest cases of this actually happening are very rare.

It found that out of 23.5 million votes counted in these states, an estimated 30 suspected incidents of non-citizens voting were referred for further investigation.

That’s about 0.0001% of all votes cast.

Yup. Or if you look at the recent news out of Oregon with accidental registrations:

      https://www.opb.org/article/2024/09/23/voter-registration-noncitizen-oregon-motor-voter/

"Oregon erroneously added 1,259 people who didn’t provide proof of U.S. citizenship to the state’s voter rolls since 2021, Secretary of State LaVonne Griffin-Valade announced Monday, a far higher number than previously known.

In addition, 10 of those people who were improperly registered subsequently voted, though at least one had become a U.S. citizen by the time they cast a ballot."

So Oregon added people to the voter registry without their consent solely to amp up this nothing burger. Got it.

It was an error in the DMV motor voter process. Foreign nationals are allowed to get Oregon drivers licenses, with voter registration through the DMV, that’s an easy thing to screw up.

Fortunately it wasn’t widespread. My daughter in law from Myanmar wasn’t registered to vote until she got her citizenship. This is her first election(!)
