“Christians, get out and vote, just this time,” Trump exclaimed to a cheering crowd in West Palm Beach, Fla.

“You won’t have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won’t have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians” he added.

“I love you Christians. I’m a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don’t have to vote again, we’ll have it fixed so good you’re not going to have to vote,” Trump said.

He says such outlandish shit on the regular now that this isn't getting anywhere near the coverage it should be. Everyone needs to have a mental reset on what's actually normal for a politician to say, and then come back to this speech again.

Frightening stuff.

This is what I find disturbing about America .... it's not so much that insane politicians have been allowed to take positions of high office .... it's that the majority of the American population just accepts it all and does either very little or nothing about it all.

It's one thing to call out a liar or charlatan ... it's quite another to have a large group of people who actively want to listen to the same charlatan for years and years and eventually accept them as reasonable and even honest.

The American political system isn't falling apart .... the entire country is falling apart.

It's quite something to watch, coming from someone that lives in the UK. Sometimes I look at our political system (especially over recent years) and wonder "wtf are we doing?", but then I think about the US and am immediately given a reality check. It makes us look normal.

I saw a documentary a while ago about how Trump is meticulously appealing to the Christian voting base - they view him as a heavenly figure and are actually beginning to class non-Trump voters and the Democrats as 'demons'. He's beyond a politician in their minds, I don't think cult of personality quite cuts it any more, this is something different.

I don't know if it's something in the water over there or what, but they've gotta cut it out now.

You can just say cult. Like the Jonestown, Waco etc. kind. It’s ok, we’re all terrifyingly aware.

[–] leftzero@lemmynsfw.com 4 points 3 months ago

It makes us look normal.

Looking from outside... no, it does not.

Both countries look like their electorates are composed mostly of ignorant deranged wilfully misinformed lunatics.

(Though, to be fair, the UK does seem to have less outspoken fundamentalist religious nutjobs, and your fascists seem to tend to mostly stay in the closet, so maybe it does make you look somewhat less worst, if definitely not anything resembling normal...)

Yes, but we've still got our bread and circuses, so we're not going to riot. We don't have a rich history of that like France, for example.

[–] MrMcGasion@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago

I'd also add to this that a whole bunch of us have at least a few extended family members that we heard spouting similarly insane takes for as long as we can remember. But because they were the patriarchs or were unhinged enough that they'd ruin the family reunion or Thanksgiving for everyone, we all learned it was in our own best interest to never challenge them.

We were conditioned from a early age to ignore it at go on with our lives, and they were conditioned that they could say more and more unhinged things and really never be challenged on it.

I'm sure the Romans said the same thing when the northern armies started falling apart.

One way to combat this constant stream of shit is to lock on certain ones unrelentingly.

This video is one. Project 2025 (and his clear ties to it) is another.

When a wannabe dictator says you won't have to vote any more...

[–] Kraiden@kbin.run 46 points 3 months ago

what he's really saying is you won't be able to vote anymore

[–] itsgroundhogdayagain@lemmy.ml 44 points 3 months ago (1 children)

That's definitely not a red flag

[–] ryan213@lemmy.ca 17 points 3 months ago

Nope, nothing to see here...

[–] mdurell@lemmy.world 16 points 3 months ago (1 children)

According to him aren't elections already fixed?

[–] orbitalmayo@lemmy.world 17 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Well... yes. But now they're going to be fixed the right way /s

[–] mdurell@lemmy.world 10 points 3 months ago

Emphasis on "right."

[–] Eyck_of_denesle@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 months ago

Wtf is this guy saying? Don't you guys have any election rules? How is this legal?

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

Does he realize the sheer volume of liberal Christians out there?

[–] cosmicrookie@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Who cares? He's saying that within 4 years, he will remove democracy! This is not about christians

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

We already knew he was planning to remove democracy. I’m hoping that his call to vote will get all the liberal Christians to vote too, specifically to prevent him from eliminating democracy.

[–] cosmicrookie@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

His call to vote should get everybody to vote. Before this, the thread was more of a guess or maybe a joke. This just got serious and dangerous

[–] ours@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

He is suggesting he'll set up a theocracy.

[–] cosmicrookie@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I don't hear him say that, unless you count Trump himself as a god. He's using religion to gather votes but i dont see him as religious.

[–] ours@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

Oh Trump is as religious as a piece of wet paper. He's just dog-whistling Christian conservatives into voting for him in the hope they can have their theocracy.

A theocracy isn't literally ruled by a god but by people claiming to represent one (like the Vatican or Taliban Afghanistan).

[–] AIhasUse@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Really? Are there pro-choice christians?

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Lots of ‘em. You just hear from the ones who like to call attention to themselves.

[–] papertowels@lemmy.one 6 points 3 months ago

Something else to consider - from my experience the majority of christians don't make it their entire identity. After all, do not pray for others to see, etc. etc.

People you know to just be regular peeps who are pro choice have a decent chance of being christian, just the shut up and love thy neighbor type, as opposed to the "LOOK AT ME, IM SO CHRISTIAN" type.

So there are two axis in which people can be overlooked and quiet - one for religious affiliation, one for their stance on abortion.

[–] AIhasUse@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

Jon Ronson's podcast miniseries on the culture wars talk about when abortion was adopted by the evangelical movement. It had a lot to do with some prominent pastors' son regretting an abortion. I don't remember the specifics, but that miniseries was great.

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

There are twice as many Protestants as there are Catholics in America.

And among Protestants, one survey found that "the only major religious groups in which a majority do not support abortion legality in all or most cases are white evangelical Protestants (27%), Latter-day Saints (30%), and Jehovah’s Witnesses (25%)". And those groups are minorities in Protestantism. I'm sure the dataset can tell you how many Christians in general feel about abortion and you can do your own breakdown: https://www.prri.org/research/abortion-views-in-all-50-states-findings-from-prris-2023-american-values-atlas/
