At least this means that the Niger coup really was unlikely to have been orchestrated by the US like some were speculating, unless it’s just a case of the intelligence apparatus neglecting to inform the state department of its current machinations…

Edit: to clarify, those speculations already had problems and this makes it even more unlikely

I knew it wasnt because they where telling france to take a hike and allying with BF, a ML state.

Also y’know, wagner helping them out. I dont see washington allying with wagner to squash french infulence in the region.

BF isnt ML? Also, I dont think you saw my most recent comment, the speculation was that if this newest government was helped along by the US they would kick the French out to harm their energy independence through the lack of extremely cheap uranium and would have to turn to the US (like they did to Germany by blowing up the Nordstream). There were already problems with this theory (and I think the presence of Wagner was one of them?), and I think this is further evidence that’s not a correct theory

          BF isnt ML?

It is, the new commander who took over in a coup is a turbo-commie interested in reviving Sankaras legacy, hes pretty based.

          https://hoodcommunist.org/2023/03/02/the-homeland-or-death-accomplishments-of-the-traore-government-in-burkina-faso/amp/

Its hard to argue this is the way the US would have wanted it to go, Niger coming closer to forming a communist/socialist bloc with BF & Angola and the wider BRICS community.

That’s the PM, Tambelá, comrade, not the president (who truly wields power), Traroré. Now, it’s a good sign that he’s at least not an anticommunist because he was willing to give a position in government to a ML like Tambelá, but as far as actually being a ML he hasn’t shown any other signs of that. It’s far more likely that he just generally wants the west out of the country, and he thinks that appointing a popular person in BF to (from what I can tell) a relatively weak position in government will help ensure the support of the population.

However, this also means Traroré potentially has a dedicated ML whispering in his ear, so I’m optimistic that he could take a turn to being a true Sankarist in his own right in the near future.

Eh but installing a government that kicks you and your allies out isnt just causing chaos, it would be actively shooting yourself in the foot. Now, the speculation was that this was to get France off of cheap uranium so they would have to buy more LNG, but I’ve seen good criticisms of that theory, and this seems like more evidence that the US didnt want this coup to happen. Could also be a bad thing, if it doesnt have the backing of the US it means they could easily be a target for our intelligence apparatus to topple in some way or another

Casus belli to invade and have it all for themselves? Idk. If there’s one thing the US is good at it’s muddying waters.

Fair, but this would be a particularly weak casus belli, plus the media is priming us for war against either China or Mexico, this would be an extremely weird and hard pivot

It’s not on mainstream news as much as china fear mongering, but all the flailing about the border and cartels has a militaristic bent to it, like we will need to invade mexico to get them to control their side of the border and clean up the cartels, although that is normally only explicitly said on the most deranged right wing media outlets, but you still see a bit of a general sentiment trickle up through the rest of the media, especially on fox news

Unfortunately the most deranged US right wing talking points find there way to the center in short time. This fucking shithole country…

I should say it seems most likely that they really really want to go to war against China, but there’s conflict within the ruling class about that (see all the “we have to go to war by 2025!” BS vs the billionaires who still make trips over there to reassure China that everything’s fine), and that they output all the shit about the border and cartels to give themselves a pivot point for another war to distract Americans from their material conditions.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate the irony of Victoria Nuland being “shocked” by a coup?
