The company that oversees the Domino’s Pizza brand in Russia said it will file for bankruptcy there, signaling a definitive end to its operations in that country nearly 18 months after President Vladimir Putin launched an unprovoked invasion of neighboring Ukraine.

DP Eurasia, the franchisee for Domino’s in Europe and Asia, cited unspecified business challenges in Russia, where it operated more than 100 restaurants. The U.S.-based Dominos Pizza has said it cut off financial support for the Russian business in December 2022.

A bankruptcy filing is now forthcoming, the company said.

I mean, to be fair, they stopped all financial support to Russia in 2022 (still took too long). This was just a pre-existing licensing agreement. I doubt they could’ve revoked it. Most people don’t think to put a “must stop operating in any country that commits war crimes” clause in their licensing deals

These things are not related. Domino’s had the ability to leave (despite any imagined contracts) this entire time. They chose to stay in hopes of continued profit.

They chose money over human life, which is the expected behavior of sub-humans. Russia did not steal from them. Russia did not imprison or threaten them. They chose to stay for profit because they are villainous shitstains. Do not defend them. They neither need nor want your defense (unless it brings them profit).

I hate to spoil this for you but the only reason any brand or corp left Russia was because they were afraid of reduced profits (sanctions notwithstanding). End of story. That just happens to line up with the majority of people’s sentiments which is “Fuck Russia.” Don’t confused morality with perfectly timed greed.

You have to keep in mind that the Russian government holds workers hostage. The Kremlin literally requires foreign companies to have an office with workers located in Russia just so that the workers can be threatened in order to pressure the company. And most companies care enough about their image to try and prevent headlines like “[Company] allowed workers in Russia to be murdered”.

These companies are taking even longer:

    https://som.yale.edu/story/2022/over-1000-companies-have-curtailed-operations-russia-some-remain

As in they are still operating as if nothing has happened.

    Companies like:

    • Cloudflare
    • Honor

I’ll be honest, I think I ate papa johns like two decades ago, so I have no idea. They just aren’t around me. But yeah if you think about it, they’re totally fast food. Cheap and consistent, you know what you’re getting. But if you want something GOOD you gotta go with a real, local pizza place.

In Germany they bought up Hallo Pizza, which was so much better, both in quality and what they offered.

              Let’s check Wikipedia’s definition:

Fast food is a type of mass-produced food designed for commercial resale, with a strong priority placed on speed of service.

That does not apply to a pizza made on your order in a sit-down pizzeria where you wait just as long as in other kinds of restaurants.

It does, because it’s literally the same. A fast food service still rolls out the dough, adds the tomato sauce, cheese and other ingredients and throws it into the oven for a few minutes. The only difference is that a big delivery service that specializes on pizzas is that they prepare much larger quantities beforehand, as they can expect to use much more than a restaurant.

But since you’re such a fan of Wikipedia, you might want to read the fast food article proper:

Examples of fast food (left to right, top to bottom): Cheeseburger, soft drink, french fries, pizza margherita, hot dog, fried chicken, submarine sandwich, and donuts.

The UK has adopted fast food from other cultures as well, such as pizza, doner kebab, and curry. More recently, healthier alternatives to conventional fast food have also emerged.

Common menu items at fast food outlets include fish and chips, sandwiches, pitas, hamburgers, fried chicken, french fries, onion rings, chicken nuggets, tacos, pizza, hot dogs, and ice cream, though many fast food restaurants offer “slower” foods like chili, mashed potatoes, and salads.

                etc.

Which is the critical difference - “with a strong priority placed on speed of service”. If you don’t prepare it with a focus on speed, and prepare it in a slow way, serve the customer in a more normal slow setting, then it’s not “fast food”, because there’s nothing “fast” about it.

Last I heard is that they simply couldn’t, as the assets were locked at the bank they were using in Russia, which came under sanctions. They technically still have the investments, but have written them off as worthless.

According to this Norwegian publication in an article published January 31st 2023:

the Norwegian oil fund still holds hundreds of millions worth of shares in petroleum companies like Gazprom, Novatek, Bashneft and Lukoil

Even if the value of the companies they’ve invested in lowers, they still haven’t pulled out any of their financial investments from Russia. The investments could be worth very little, but they still have something invested in Russia.

Is money more important to Norway than justice?

Norwegian Government on February 28, 2022, ordered the Oil Fund to freeze all investments in Russia and prepare a plan for divesting with the goal of totally exiting the Russian stock market

Why has it taken them much more than a year to even communicate their ‘plan’ to make the divestment happen?

Is Domino’s Pizza really better at handling their finances than the wealthiest pension fund in the world?

I like pizza very much, thanks for asking. In general, I liked US, the natural beauty and diversity of the West is stunning. I also liked the vibe of the people. Public transportation sucks for the most part. Fortunately I didn’t have to move, the communist regime “moved”.

I just don’t attach morality to shitty brands or corporations. It’s okay we don’t need to act like they are “on our side” because inherently they are the ones exploiting us. They cater to the market, not a sense of morality. Acting like they actually care, or have some sort of moral compass is just sticking your head in the sand against the irrefutable evidence of the capitalist hellscape we live in.
