We’re dreaming of a white list, because we’re just like the ones you used to know More than half of Americans are using ad blocking software, and among advertising, programming, and security professionals that fraction is more like two-thirds to three-quarters.…

The ads became insanely intrusive, so people started blocking ads in droves.

So google blocks anyone from using adblockers and it causes a Barbra Streisand effect, making everyone who uses youtube aware of adblockers.

So then all the major adblockers just got better at blocking ads. And now the internet is completely unuseable without adblockers equipped with anti-adblock blocking

I trace Ad blockers to pop up’s. Those were so horribly intrusive and annoying that a majority of people installed toolbars and plug ins to block them and ever since pop up blocking has been a standard feature of pretty much every browser.

I didn’t mind well-behaved ads as part of a page. Once they started crawling out to intercept clicks or take over the page, I said nope. Now, if I ever see a page without an ad blocker, they’re covered in ads, with only a little content for every 10 ads. Wtf

I’ve had pihole set up at my house for network level ad blocking for a while now. That with my vpn back to the house websites are almost tolerable.

And it’s not just the ads, they have SO MUCH trackers! Can’t go anywhere without every single shitty company following you around.

Further than ad blockers, if the page doesn’t work with reader mode or simple view, I don’t read it, just swipe back.

Between insane ad intrusiveness, the ridiculous notifications about cookies, and the general terrible usability and lack of concern for a clean, user focused design of most sites now, I can’t use most of the Internet these days.

We need a new model. Free isn’t free anymore, it’s more taxing than fees
