I love me some piracy, but I don’t blame them for taking an anti-piracy stance. Wouldn’t want to get wrapped up in any legal issues as a small team surviving on donations.

Can always make an alt account on an instance that isn’t blocking it, anyway.

i am going to give a Historically correct answer:

during the cold war, there was a peaceful uprising in the soviets puppet states (mainly hungary i believe).
the soviets decided the way to deal with these people was to send in tanks and slaughter the peacefully protesting civilians

everyone that was excusing the soviets use of Tanks against Civilians was dubbed a “tankie”

As I recall everyone calls communists as tankies. For example people, who prefer maoism, that cuban communism and other ones I guess.

There is a distinction between Communists and tankies.

Tankies are a subset of Communists. Specifically, tankies have rejected Marx in favor of authoritarianism, power for power’s sake. “Everyone is equal, and some people are more equal than others” sort of thinking. They want to show anyone who doesn’t agree with them the barrel of a gun.

The term came from when the Soviets invaded Hungary in order to prevent popular reforms. But I think a better example of what tankies are like (and how they differ from communists) is looking at Czechoslovakia.

Czechoslovakia was a communist country already, but they were doing reforms that would help the average worker and promote equality within the country. The plan was to transition away from a single-party state within Czechoslovakia and towards a form of democratic socialism, where the parties still held core communist ideas but no one figure could wield influence (in line with what Marx expected).

The Soviets saw this as a threat. Their model of a one-party authoritarian state where the secret police dominate everything and the proletariat have no rights is the one they wanted to push everywhere. So they invaded Czechoslovakia and sent tanks into the country.

Later, the Chinese Communist Party sent tanks in to crush peaceful protestors who were asking for human rights and democracy within the proletariat. The protesters were literally turned into jelly by the tanks and washed down into the gutters.

Tankies support these atrocities. They say that a one-party authoritarian state is the only way to do things. Don’t let them trick you into thinking they’re the only true Communists - tankies want an upper class and a lower class, just like capitalists do. The distinction is that to tankies, the upper class are the party elite, the ones who do and say what they’re told. The lower class are the people they don’t like, or those who are unlucky enough not to have friends in high places.

Tankies are absolute scum. Lemmy’s founders are tankies, Lemmygrad and Lemmy.ml both push tankie politics (Lemmy.ml is more subtle about it, but does enforce it via their moderation policy), and now Hexbear is coming over to Lemmy in order to complete the tankie trifecta.

I hate that this place is infested with tankies. I don’t mind communists - I’m pretty left-leaning myself - but tankies are not true communists, and they never can be unless they fundamentally rethink their views about equality and freedom.

This is why I pretty much consider Tankies “right wing fascists” alongside conservatives. They have the exact same goals in mind after all the left/right distinction is a distraction.

Amen, just unsubbed so many communities due to too much tankie shit getting on my feed.

I am also very left leaning, but so frustrated with the state of left, with so many subdivisions of leftist still stuck on 20th century, tankies being the worst example.

Yeah I knew that communism != tankies, I just felt like most of users use this term as that. Feeling kinda ashamed of myself, that I forgot the origin of tankie, because I’m hungarian. Thanks for the clarification!

So what you have to know about anarchy is that the vast, vast majority of unjust hierarchies are social constructs. Patriarchy, gender binary, whiteness, the state, neuronormativism, sanity, capitalism, religion.

These all exist in the mind. So to know the mind and understand it is to know hierarchy and to know anarchy. To be able to change your thoughts and those of others is to be capable of praxis. Materialism alone cannot create anarchy. Socialism, yes. But not communism. Communism comes from the power to destroy the shackles and weapons of the mind. This is chaotic anarchy, the anarchism of the psychonaut.

Does Lemmy.world have a policy against piracy? It seems like several instances have piracy related communities and a lot of users from elsewhere post to them.

It’s IMO an existential threat for lemmy.world. Sure, a big corporation could handle it, but here we’re talking about an instance which will be forced to shut down if copyright lawyers knock at the admins’ doors. Federation is a double-edged sword, it means technically you also host all the content that’s being published on instances that are federated with you, so in particular if piracy communities don’t do a good enough job cleaning up lemmy.world will be liable for that content since it will be physically on this server too.

They did it to avoid legal troubles, they would not get in one yet but almost certainly in the future

Which doesn’t make sense. If anything you’ll get hit with a DMCA and just ban the communities then. Why start trouble now when there isn’t any?

blocked all big piracy communities, is trying to move to discord for all announcements.

Too add my personal opinion like why the fuck, they gain nothing from the discord thing and the piracy thing has been proven pretty safe from email servers operating similarly
