Lemmy seems like a nice person, even helping with bootloader unlocking and stuff

[–] ZeroCool@slrpnk.net 5 points 9 months ago (3 children)

I think Lemmy is a pretty cool guy. Eh helps support legacy devices and doesnt afraid of anything.

[–] hperrin@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago (2 children)

I have not heard a reference to this in like ten years.

[–] ZeroCool@slrpnk.net 2 points 9 months ago

Yeah I'm just getting warmed up. Maybe I'll break out a Chuck Testa reference later!

[–] subtext@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Can you share the origin with the rest of us?

Unlike that infamous hacker known as 4chan

One of the best Android phones ever made. Just seeing this photo made me happy and Nostalgic

[–] Otherwise_Direction7@monyet.cc 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Isn’t this phone was originally shipped with Windows Phone 8? How do you managed to mod it out and install Android on it?

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 5 points 9 months ago (1 children)

There might have been a windows version, but I definitely had an android one.

Oh I see…

Welp, that make it far more easier technically to pull off that I imagine it would be

Ah, the wonderful M8. Loved that phone, used one for over a year.

I was the only person in my company capable of stripping them down for repair. Really not built to come apart

[–] cardboardchris@lemmings.world 3 points 9 months ago

I had one for a couple years too, back when it was new. I loved it. such good stereo speakers.

If you're going to use WhatsApp ( and not Signal 😮‍💨 ), at least use it in a separate profile ( using Shelter ) so it doesn't scan your contacts ( and probably everything else )

[–] BlanK0@lemmy.ml 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I didn't know Shelter existed!!! Damn, thx for the recommendation, this has to be shilled more often imho

Good point, I'm gonna uninstall it. I just waned to show someone that you dont need the playstore to install WhatsApp

[–] deadlock@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Just recently discovered shelter, too. I would have gotten it way earlier if I knew. Had to install an app that I knew was too grabby with data (luckily for one-time use) and only found out about shelter researching how to stop it from spying too much.

This is actually insane. That phone is like a decade old isn't it?

[–] Trainguyrom@reddthat.com 2 points 9 months ago

I kept a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 from 2013 up to date with CyanogenNod until the LineageOS fork. That thing had 768MB of RAM and 8GB of storage and couldn't even fully update to Android 4.4.4 due to lack of storage space, but around Android 7 with custom ROMs was when I felt it simply wasn't worth the effort anymore due to the terrible performance

[–] Life_inst_bad@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago
  1. March 2014 to be exact!
[–] tiramichu@lemm.ee 1 points 9 months ago

Yep, and only 2GB RAM.

[–] user224@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 9 months ago

Fun fact: You can put PostmarketOS on Nokia N900 which is from 2009. It should still make it relatively usable, though probably quite slow. It only has 256MB RAM and a single-core 32-bit 600MHz CPU.

I wish N900 had a modern version.

[–] Pantherina@feddit.de 1 points 9 months ago (5 children)

Uhm, I highly recommend running WhatsCrap in the Work profile. Unlock it using Shelter.

Also, bad news maybe but that phone is insecure as fu*k. It didnt get updates forever and this means it will also not be private anymore if you get hacked.

LineageOS cant provide kernel updates or Firmware updates, thats simply how SOC devices work...

But good learning practice! Installing GrapheneOS is a breeze compared to LineageOS though hahahaa, I resized the partition of a Nokia phone once, to get a higher Android LineageOS in there.

sniffs

It still smells like corporate data collecting nonsense in here. And I think I know why.

Spoiler alert: it's WhatsApp.
