There are tons of listing for cheap Mac’s on marketplace now. Even Mac studios. The mini M4 is a very good deal. Super happy with mine.

Older intel macs could do an internet recovery on a bare drive. The internet recovery system was part of the ROMs/BIOS.
Don’t tell him about building an unRAID server on a PC. It’s a rabbit hole your dad will love.
Can scale it from cheap used hardware to top of the line server hardware.
I started mine with retired PC hardware and have upgraded it to used commercial server hardware and it’s rock solid with more storage than my office server at work. 😂. The ultimate tinkering platform.
Set mine up as well. Marvellous piece of kit. Quite affordable for what you get.
I’ve heard it doesn’t due to Apple restrictions on the new operating systems for Apple silicon but I’ve never tried it myself.
Ifixit accomplished it. Required another Mac to reinstall the OS.
Apple decided they want memory modules that only contain memory because the storage controller is on their own silicon and they have direct low level access to the storage chips if they do it themselves. Probably cheaper (for them) without redundant controller parts they don’t need too.
Surprised nobody has reverse engineered this yet to make compatible upgrade modules. Probably not enough money in it. Edit: there’s a kickstarter for some homebrew modules which seem to work but they’re still pretty expensive.
I just got mine with 1TB. I added a second external SSD for a bit more space. Good enough for me. The only issue is that I can’t point the Dropbox app at the external drive. The new one has to point to the user home folder (guess I could move all of that to the external drive).
They actually do. I work with them and I’ve seen it on multiple occasions here (not the US). Maybe you should try it.
But I’m not talking about the US. Did you miss that?
Yes totally agree about that. I don’t believe the police in Canada have qualified immunity however it is more difficult to get a conviction against them.
That’s what a lot of people say until they’re in need of some police action then it’s all about “why aren’t the police doing their jobs!?”
For the record I’m 100% against illegal searches. Court orders should be required to look at personal devices.
That said, I volunteer with cops in Canada and find them to be very professional. Saw a female officer working with a non-white individual high on drugs at a hospital and she kept the person calm and relaxed by reading a book to them as you would a child. Totally worked.
Already got my shipping notification. Thankfully work is footing the bill but it’s not unreasonably expensive for the value it provides me at work.
Missing in headline. “Developer beta”
Apple seems to have it figured out, my last two iPhones have had OLED screens and I never saw any burn-in despite having them on a lot and fairly bright.
Ah well. I’m an Apple user and I own stock in them. I’m on both sides of this fence.
Now work profits over time into that equation and you’re getting it.
They make far more money selling entirely new computer hardware with integrated memory. They charge a fairly steep price for memory and I’m sure their fab costs are nowhere near that.
Banging out a new CPU with different amounts of memory is relatively cheap, not like they’re redesigning from scratch to throw in a few more memory components. Memory is simple and predictable.
If I was them I’d make a single chip with 32-64GB of RAM and just blow fuses to the necessary sizes to make it cheap, but although that makes sense for manufacturing it’s a PR issue down the road when someone finds out.
Got nothing for you. Good luck.
Then you have to ask how would that change benefit Apple?
If there’s no significant benefit they won’t do it.
These don’t use DDR5 memory. It’s all on the silicon with the CPU. The same pricing rules don’t apply.
And Mac users tend to be less “price sensitive” than PC users. My M4 Mac mini will be here next week. 24GB should be just fine on it.
Happily work is footing the entire bill for it, including a new monitor so it’s a pretty sweet upgrade for me.
I own Apple stock and an M4 Mini. Happy to see upgrade options.
