Your remark about “spoken words” made be think about this and I find it curious, since “small-talk” has become something of a fixed expression.
While words related to vocal conversations do appear in other phrases like “being left speechless” for example, I imagine “small-talk” to be more of a thing on its own in today’s usage.
I’m not arguing for either determinism or non-deterministism here, but let me ask you this:
If every action has a cause, and every action has a subsequent reaction, and all these chains of events follow predictable rules, what is the factor of “randomness” that allows for free will to exist?

European here. Our self-checkouts make no sounds and don’t have any of that unexpected item bs. The experience is great. If your experience is like what I’ve read here, I begin to understand why it’s disliked.
That’s the problem. You paid only once. The companies want you to pay indefinitely. And if they control your OS, well, they can shove ads or broatware into your face all they wish gaining more revenue.

I used Joplin everyday for half a year but switched to Obsidian after that. They both essentially do the same, but I found the latter to be more adaptable to my needs and paradoxically easier to modify.
Don’t get me wrong, the open source one in still great. Served me well while I was using it.
