It uses some form of VNC (forget the name). Performance is fine for the VMs for non-video stuff.
You can run whatever you want inside a VM too.

Works for me, but damn it’s dog snot slow. Like typing takes 1-2 seconds for each character to show up
They also had water wheels which could do work, like lifting.
Serious question, why not use current wifi for that kind of distance?
I know, it’s probably not really easy to make the comparison at this point - power usage is definitely part of that equation. Though the lower bandwidth of this doesn’t seem quite enough for video?
Edit: I misread the bandwidth as 347kbit, not Mbit. So yea, this looks very promising for video, especially given the limitations of Wifi, plus using less power.
How do you know how much it’s filled?
Also, hot water heat works differently than steam, and many steam systems have been converted to hot water, so it’s not easy to know just by looking at a radiator.
As other people have said, let the maintenance folks handle it. They know the system.
There was a post recently about “.LAN” recently being added to the DNS spec
I mean Musk said Twitter was a Bad Thing and problematic.
Then a year or so later bought it, and immediately started doing things which reduced it’s popularity and influence.
HAM can do 50 miles, under the right conditions.
GMRS can using repeaters or a repeater network (which is essentially what cell phones do).
Define “communicate”.
With who?
Over what distance?
Also for what kind of scenario?
There’s probably some more things to define first, which will help guide a solution.
In a nutshell, over short/local distances (1/4 mile to perhaps 5 miles under ideal conditions, which never happen), GMRS can be used. It’s easy to learn. But it’s very range limited in general.
You could setup your own repeater on something high, and get miles of range then (I regularly pickup folks 10+ miles away because there’s a repeater half way between us on a tall building).
Long distance, HAM/HF. But that’s very complex, you really have to learn quite a bit to make that happen, and whoever’s on the other end would need similar skilset.
CB can do significant distance too.
With any radio, the higher the antenna, the farther the reach - that’s the primary driver.
Radio is a helluva rabbit hole, but I’d recommend starting with GMRS - radios are fairly inexpensive, you can get started for about $100 if you find a deal on a radio 2 pack (and not the cheap blister pack crap, something like TidRadio or better).
Cell phones are just radios that link to a repeater nearby - the cell tower. That tower then links to the phone network, typically via cable.

Welp, looks like my lights will never be turned off again.
Lol, I get it, I often start doing the math and realize “someone has already done this”.
Cool, thanks for the link. I already knew the little 12v batteries suck (though they work fine for the intended purpose, like impact driver or work light). I kill them with any other tool.
Yea, I was just thinking is the runtime reasonable enough that having spare batteries is a sufficient approach. Like you said, long runtime isn’t required, 15 minutes total runtime is probably more than enough (though that would be hell on battery life cycle).
Since I already have a slew of Milwaukee batteries, I’m trying to avoid things with 18650, except where form factor matters (like my flashlights). A Single Battery to Rule Them All (or at least most things).
Wouldn’t it require elevation?
Yet another example of why running as root/admin is a Bad Idea©
Without being able to root, it’s a challenge.
I’ve had Verizon Samsungs for years and dealt with this.
Start with the Universal Debloat Utility. . Note what it says about disabling some things isn’t advisable. The recommended list is safe - I’ve used it extensively on Samsung.
After that, yea, something like RethinkDNS will help. I’d use it, but chose to run No Root Firewall to control network access (there are others, this is the one I’m familiar with). It acts as a VPN to provide the firewall functionality. You could then use another DNS provider that blocks ads and such (since ReThink also needs to run as a VPN).
I’ve disabled most factory apps, and several Google apps. You can disable Play Store and it’ll work OK. If you disable Play Services you’ll get error pop-ups frequently.
This is about the best you can do without being able to unlock the bootloader.
I’d start with a reset. Then setup the phone without a Google account, then run the debloater.
After that, do what you like.
Off the top of my head, since he’s not moving, his momentum is very different than doing the tricks on the ground. He probably had to get a feel for the difference (notably the difference in air resistance, again, since he’s not moving forward).
My guess is the relative distance traveled is greater than usual for some of these things (train moves at a steady speed while he’s in the air, while an equivalent ground jump he’d have a velocity that would be decelerating).
I’m pretty sure it’ll be a fresh install, even if you do it from within your existing install. It’ll do a parallel install.
There’s a trial, you get a handful of searches per month for free
Good point about platform agnostic remote for management stuff. VNC is ideal for this.
And systems like Proxmox use a web GUI for most stuff, it’s a touch slow but I think that’s mostly just waiting for the system to finish the actual changes I make, and not the UI.
