EVE Online’s starry realm of New Eden is a vast expanse of more than 7000 star systems, which we have so far experienced almost exclusively from a distance aboard swooping starships or in the colossal interiors of mega-scale space stations. But all the while, I’ve imagined what might be going on down on these lonely planets I’m sailing by at impossible speeds. EVE Vanguard, a new shooter module for EVE Online built in Unreal Engine 5, will let us set foot on them and scavenge their riches in person. Well, sort of.

This isn’t CCP’s first attempt at an FPS set in the EVE universe. From 2013 to 2016 they operated Dust 514, an on-foot experience that was eventually shut down due to low player numbers. Vanguard represents a fresh attempt at introducing a human-scale component to EVE, which the developers hope will eventually combine to create a complete sci-fi experience on the ground and in space. Rather than being sold as a separate game, like Dust, Vanguard is being described as a “module” for EVE, which will use the same launcher and be free to play.

Since Eve is a game for people who find Excel spreadsheets and numbers fun, what kind of FPS is this gonna be?

First you make an Excel spreadsheet

Then you benchmark every weapon and attachment in the game

Then you optimize to make the perfect build to use in battle

And get headshot in 0.2 seconds right out of spawn

At EVE FanFest in Iceland today, they were talking for a bit about the new Excel plugin. It’s supposed to make it easier for people to make their crazy market spreadsheets by hitting the API from within Excel.

That said, I don’t use spreadsheets, and I don’t think most players do. Unless you choose to go hard on market manipulation or something, it’s not necessary.

Just a shame I haven’t actually played EVE since 2014. My 80 mil SP character just collecting dust with my horde of corpses

There’s a Mobile Tractor Unit structure you can deploy from your ship that slowly pulls in wrecks within 125km. The 202 Halloween added a Blood Raiders version that pulls in only capsuleer corpses! https://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Mobile_structures#Mobile_Tractor_Unit

The Blood Raider titan also has a dedicated Corpse Bay! https://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Molok

Dreddit is Recruiting if you’re looking to get back in. We just took some Sov again and are having a fantastic time. If you do stop by the recruiting Discord, tell 'em Claytonius sent you.

Ah nice! So my old ways of doing things (alt in destroyer with 4 tractor beam and 4 salvager) seems obsolete now.

So the way it works is it’ll pull all the wrecks right up to it, and loot any modules or ammo or whatever was dropped. The wrecks themselves just sit there gathered on the MTU (mobile tractor unit) for you to salvage if you want.

There’s also a salvaging ship now, the No this, but it doesn’t see a ton of use because everyone knows it’s easy pickins.

Fuck, I’m tempted but I have next to no free time these days. Last battle I was in was so much fun even if I was in a Guardian. I remember it started over some carriers trying to destroy a kestrel or something small like that and then we cyno’d in a fleet. Got a CTA and grabbed my closest ship. There was 1200 or so in local, took like 20 sec just to click on someone to try and heal em

Awesome. Well, if you want to try it’s a great time to be in TEST. EVE in general has had a few good updates in a row too.

Heck yeah! I’m in Dreddit, the founding corp in TEST Alliance, and we have a mentorship program, free ships/skillbooks/etc program, and a no-nonsense help channel. It’s a great place to learn how to play or re-learn after a hiatus. We’re in Soverign Null Security Space, which is where all those big EVE stories come from.
