Species named like this are called "autonymous". Like rattus rattus or puffinus puffinus.

[–] salvaria@lemmy.blahaj.zone 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I was interested in a list of species like this, but couldn't find anything when searching for "autonym". Did you mean "Tautonym" instead?

[–] Hegar@fedia.io 13 points 1 week ago

Oh doh yes I do! Once again I got tautonym and autonym mixed up. Autonym is within a species - like homo sapiens sapiens to distinguish from homo sapiens neanderthalensis.

[–] tobogganablaze@lemmus.org 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If you're cool you change languages mid name. Aquila chrysaetos.

[–] angrystego@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I'll do you one better: Diceros bicornis.

[–] Enkrod@feddit.org 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Diceros bicornis

The twohorned twohorn... this is wild.

[–] angrystego@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yeah, the author was having fun.

Gorilla used repetitiveness.

It was very effective.

[–] univers3man@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

It goes, it goes, it goes, guillotine yuh

[–] PhlubbaDubba@lemm.ee 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Personally I prefer Equus Caballus

Ð scientific name for Horse is just a fancier way of saying "horse horse"

Humanity is not often an especially creative race

[–] lengau@midwest.social 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The grizzly bear is Ursos arctos horribilis, which translates as "horrible bear bear."

[–] scutiger@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Which is kind of funny because of miscommunication, they thought they were naming a grisly bear.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

shoutout for using thorn and eth, but man using just eth as a short for "the" took me a couple seconds to figure out.

[–] PhlubbaDubba@lemm.ee -3 points 1 week ago

It's borrowed from Shavian's idea of short handing certain grammar words. Were I a bolder man I'd be doing ð same for for, but, and, not, so, to, and oðers, along wið a host of orþographic reforms.

[–] HEXN3T@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago
