Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)

(This list may get expanded when necessary.)

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @federalreverse@feddit.org, @poVoq@slrpnk.net, or @anzo@programming.dev.

Greece with the steel chair

[–] Blizzard@lemmy.zip 16 points 1 month ago

Greece is basically a one big olive that Greeks live on.

[–] BeigeAgenda@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 month ago (2 children)

In this case both wins, Italy gets a cut and Spain gets to sell their oil.

The only loses is us consumers.

Regarding olives, my favorite are Kalamata from Greece.

Olive oil will become a luxury product anyway, with Xylella and climate change harming production. Italy's olive future looks especially grim, considering we've banned cultivattion of GMOs which could aid against the parasites and droughts.

Most (all?) people I've cooked with use EVO oil for everything but deep frying, so I bet a significant fraction of olive oil used in Italy ends up ruined in a hot pan!

Italy priced me out. I am buying Greek now

[–] AdNecrias@lemmy.pt 2 points 1 month ago

Laughs in ever price increasing local Portuguese oil

[–] jenesaisquoi@feddit.org 3 points 1 month ago

Same. All hail the mighty Kalamata.

[–] NotAnonymousAtAll@feddit.org 15 points 1 month ago

Nothing described in that article even remotely resembles a war. The title is pure, shameless clickbait.

Just don't let Murica hear that 'O' word or they'd be coming with their guns blazing.

[–] zephorah@lemm.ee 7 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Which O? Oil or Olive, because olives are to die for. Possibly in a war. Just sayin’.

How does Kamala feel about olives?

[–] Jaccident@lemm.ee 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

She wants to invade for them, but the Joint Chiefs told her it would be… Kalamata-ous

[–] zephorah@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago

Take your upvote.

They can't burn this in their V12 that gets 1 MPG so Spain and Italy are safe.

[–] pastermil@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 month ago

The Arabs used to say that and look where we are now.

[–] ramble81@lemm.ee 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Morocco meanwhile laughing away watching with their olives.

[–] niktemadur@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

That's an angle I've yet to see at upscale markets, turbo-branding the specific qualities of olive oil from Morocco.
Someone could make a fortune if they're not careful!
"Whoops! I slipped on Moroccan olive oil and hit the ground rich!"

Italy has a fraction of the territory of Spain, of which a fraction is usable in agriculture (Italy is mostly mountains), and a fraction of that can be used for Olive trees. Of course Spain has more yield, with their immense spaces and flat fields.

As for selling more or less, it's just a supply chain thing, Italian companies were better placed to sell it, but the bottle clearly states when it's Italian oil and when it's not.
These sort of antagonizing takes intra-EU are not helpful.

[–] Sconrad122@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Italy is 60% of the size of Spain and has a similar ratio of arable land (27.1 vs 27.9% per Wikipedia, Spain is also quite mountainous). Doesn't really invalidate the point in your comment, but I expected a bigger difference when comparing "immense spaces and flat fields"to a mostly mountainous fraction of the territory

[–] Damage@feddit.it 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Honestly I'm surprised, but anyway you grow crops on arable land, not trees.

[–] federalreverse@feddit.org 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

A big difference between Spain and at least Greece, is that in Spain, farmers tend to optimize for yield. This means they are planting and cutting down trees quite often, whereas in Greece old trees are usually left standing for longer.

(Can't really say about Italy though.)

[–] voodoocode@feddit.org 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Large parts of spain are almost desert though

[–] Nikelui@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Which is the perfect climate to grow olive trees. The more arid, the better.

[–] AdNecrias@lemmy.pt 1 points 1 month ago

One of the world's biggest olive producers is Tunisia, where you have actual desert. Anything that can capture a little of the humidity, like valleys in between hills, they plant olive trees. If it has a little more water it's dates.
