It's a bit of an apples and oranges situation but considering the history I'm curious which one people prefer in a situation where you could only have one. I believe 2006 is still considered abandonware with it previously being listed on Steam but being removed when they ran out of keys.

I liked 2017's gameplay but I felt like 2006 was more memorable and unique so I think I'd choose it.

2006 was a neat game with some particularly cool bits, but 2017 is one of my favorite games of all time and pound for pound is a superior game due to 2017 being a spiritual successor to System Shock 2.

Very different games though, I don't honestly think they should be compared directly, it was already a weird choice for Prey 2017 to receive the franchise name.

I'll second this entirely.

Prey 2006 is a slightly gory boomer shooter with interesting topsy-turvy levels, gravity tricks, a few cool enemies and guns and powers, and a campy alien abduction / invasion story. It might be a little underrated in its genre. Definitely fun.

But Prey 2017 was more of a clever stealth action / psych horror title in the vein of Deus Ex and of course System Shock. Brilliant interconnected level design, a deep story, a good (though not super original) roster of guns and superpowers, some tricky puzzles, and a few interesting and enemies. It gets a good amount of love but I still think it deserves wider recognition as an excellent game.

It's frankly stupid that they have the same name.

2006 was mind blowing.
i hear great things about 2017 but it's Prey in name only. Why on earth they won't remake OG Prey I will never understand

2006 all the way. I'll never understand why they opted to cancel the sequel (which was looking amazing, btw) and use the same name for a completely new IP.

It's was a really strange mix of puzzle and brainfucked mechanics. The story was original and something new/fresh.

I really hoped for a sequel or a reboot... The new IP is just 'meh'... nothing special about it... Or maybe I'm just getting old and nostalgia is kicking in ^^

Damn, how is the Prey 2017 version one of my all time favorites but I didn't know there was a 2006 Prey game.

They are completely unrelated. They just had a really cool name they didn't want to lose.

It probably doesn't help that it's abandonware and was limited largely to the PC and Xbox 360.

A lot of people only hear about it in "top abandonware games" lists that would mention it and games like Alpha Protocol which was recently relisted.

Haven't played the other so 2017 definitely.

Do you have any other games where the first hour was extremely enjoyable?

I felt that way about Returnal

Por que no los dos?

[–] FireTower@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Haven't played '06 but the '17 had the best first hour of any game I've played.

Fairly different games, 2006 was more of a classic linear narrative shooter in the early 2000s tradition but with some brilliant mechanics and novel guns, and a pretty cool storyline (if a bit b-movie-like). 2017 offers a freedom of approach and exploration that's uncomparable, but it's also more stern in atmosphere and tone. I don't have a favourite, but now you made me want to do a replay of 2006

I feel like 2006 was a bit like a rollercoaster. You kind of just enjoy the ride and eagerly await what's coming next. It helps it's a relatively short game by today's standards with HowLongToBeat saying it will take seven hours to complete.

I've only played the 2006 game, (loved it. 10/10 game for me) and was really excited for what was going to be Prey 2, there's still a trailer floating around for it, you'd be a human bounty hunter cast into the wider galaxy post prey 2006s story. Unfortunately that didn't get made.

I've heard good things about the 2017 but have yet to play it! Its been on my list for a while.

If you've played prop hunt and like randomly beating objects to find out what's people you'll probably like 2017.

In all seriousness though it is a good game that has a decent amount of fun frantic chaotic combat. I feel like it's a bit difficult to compare to other games but if I had to I'd say it reminds me a bit of BioShock and Control

I like them both. Two completely different games called Prey indeed. The first one I played on Xbox 360 when I just got one, the 'reboot' on PC. I think I liked the story from the first one better, and I wish they continued the first Prey as it ended with kind of a cliffhanger, but the second Prey all in all was a good game.
