Introduction

Every month, we retire the pinned community meta post from the last month, and create a fresh one with updated news. We summarize the state of the instance, and create a space for public comments and discussions that don’t merit their own meta post.

Software Status

There have been some smaller updates on the Wiki and Movim last month, and we added a new Voyager frontend for mobile use.

For June, it looks like the long awaited Lemmy v0.19.4 will be released with a lot of bugfixes, so there will likely be a short scheduled down-time while we upgrade our instance. There will be another announcement on /c/meta about this once we know more. Edit: Upgrade completed on 2024-06-09.

Community Highlights

With the start of the summer, maybe it's time to start that DIY project you always dreamed off? Or you found the perfect Buy it for Life item to share? But maybe if it isn't quite that durable, you still have a great Fixing story to tell? If anything, Anti-consumption might be your thing.

Alternatively, now is a great time to start with In person Activism, or at least plan a nice Solarpunk Travel this summer? If camping and hiking is your thing, don't forget to share pictures of The Great Outdoors.

Special Welcome to Feddit.de refugees

We regret the technical issues that brought you here, but it's great to have you on board! Willkommen ihr Zuhausies 🥰

We have been following the technical issues that caused this lengthy partial outage of feddit.de for some time now and hopefully they will find a solution or make an alternative German language instance soon.

Slrpnk.net actually had a similar situation in November 2023, which luckily only caused 12h of down-time, but it was pretty stressful for all people involved. Since then we have been testing out different means to let more admins have remote access to our servers, however finding the right balance between security and ease of use isn't easy. Especially means to increase security such as fail2ban and two-factor-authentification tend to lock people out with the worst timing as people make errors in unfamiliar and stressful situations. But I think we found a reasonable compromise now and will soon give it a try.

Open discussion

It’s now your turn to tell us what’s new! Any topic related to this community, our infrastructure, or the Fediverse at large is fair game. If you’ve created a new community, this is a great thread to tell us about it. All comments will get extra visibility up until the beginning of next month. Got questions? Ask’em!

Nothing to complain about, general appreciation post. Boffo people, well done!

One of the Feddit.de refugees here. These monthly updates are great, keep up the good work! :)

What software does the wiki use? Being able to sign in with our lemmy accounts is really cool

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 13 points 5 months ago

Dokuwiki. I documented the setup here: https://f-hub.org/Solarpunk/dokuwiki-auth-lemmy

I still need to fix the issue with that users that have not set their display name or email address can not login though.

I've been here a few months but finally decided to make Slrpnk my home Lemmy instance. Mostly because I like the discussion topics and found myself browsing this site more than other Lemmy instances. My former home instance is just too unreliable and breaks federation too often and that's been the story since last June, a year ago now.

Is there a place to donate to help pay for hosting costs?

Currently there isn't, please donate to the Lemmy devs instead if you feel like contributing financially.

[–] solo@slrpnk.net 4 points 5 months ago

There is a Lemmy-Donate thingy in the top menu, at the heart icon

It's for sure an interesting project for small or single user instances, but I doubt it scales well, at least in its current state of development.

After the upgrade, I wound up setting my theme to litely to get more legible fonts; the default theme has fonts that aren't pleasant to read.

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 7 points 5 months ago

I have no way to test it, but I think the font is mainly looking a bit odd on Windows devices. It is somehow optimized for Japanese letters and Windows doesn't seem to have good support for that.

Hi! Brand new, wondering if I could make a new community but seems like it's not going through, is there a throttle on new users creating communities or another technical restriction I may not be aware of?

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 8 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Not that I am aware off. It should work. What is the community name you are trying to create? Maybe it conflicts with a community that already existed but was removed? This only hides them, but name conflicts can still occur. We regularly remove un-moderated communities, so it is not impossible.

One more upgrade thing I'm noticing: the way the UI elements move around repeatedly during post submission makes it much easier to accidentally double-post.

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 4 points 4 months ago

Yeah, there is something messed up there. For the time being, maybe use one of the alternative frontends?

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 5 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I’ve been finding that the next button just reloads the first page again. Not sure if that’s just me.

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Seems to work here as intended. Maybe some browser plugin issue?

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 3 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

I’m not using any extensions. I had a content blocker in place but turned it off and the problem persists. In fact I can’t interact with any of the interface at the top or bottom of the page.

Edit: I am using Safari. If anyone else experiences this please comment because it makes it very difficult to use the site currently and I have not figured out any cause.

[–] hazeebabee@slrpnk.net 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Have you tried other browsers? I checked on Firefox & it works. Interesting bug, I hope it doesn't effect you for too long

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 3 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

I’ve tried Firefox on my desktop (works) but not on my phone which is what I browse on most of the time. I understand that Firefox on iOS is also based on Safari’s architecture though, and I don’t have space to install the app currently. Need to spend some time deleting or backing up photos but haven’t found the time since this issue arose.

I did find that voyager.slrpnk.net works so I have been using that since then.

[–] hazeebabee@slrpnk.net 3 points 4 months ago

I'm glad you found one that works :) ive heard lots of good things about voyager as a web app.

Also: I didn't know ios firefox was different than android firefox. Super interesting

One more oddity since the upgrade:

cross-posting doesn't work cleanly anymore.

When you click the cross-post button, it pre-fills the contents of the form for submitting to another community, but as soon as you select a community to cross-post into, it clears the contents.

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Yes, that is a known bug with 0.19.4 I think.

[–] andrewrgross@slrpnk.net 3 points 4 months ago

Ok, I saw that.

[–] laxryn@slrpnk.net 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Can we use the movim instance for general chat with other JIDs, as in would it be an allowed use.

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Yes? It is a fully federated XMPP account/client. Why do you think there would be a limit on that?

[–] laxryn@slrpnk.net 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I don't think there is a technical limit, I attempted to frame it in that perspective. My question was more about maybe you set it up just for slrpnk.net users to chat about mod activities or similar and don't want folks using it outside that context.

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 3 points 4 months ago

If we gave that impression it wasn't intentional. But of course feel free to join our own groups chats as well.

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 2 points 4 months ago

Upgrade to 0.19.5 was a quick one. Please let us know if this fixed the main issues with the lemmy-ui interface on 0.19.4.

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 1 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

When uploading images from windows (but not from the mac) .avif files are not included in the supported image types, even though they in fact work. These are common for news outlets to use, and I'm manually uploading to get them used as thumbnails.

Known bug?

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Hmm, no. I guess this is only a lemmy-ui frontend issue. Although I probably need to have another look at the pict-rs image settings for animated formats.

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 1 points 4 months ago

I changed the pict-rs settings a bit to allow more file types, but I assume your main issue is frontend and/or browser related.
