More or less. The Deutschlandlied) is the hymn of Germany since before the Nazi era, wasn’t changed by the Nazis and still is today. But today only the third stanza is officially the hymn. However, people often sing the first one, which is the most well known.

During the Nazi era, there were a second hymn, which is more directly linked to this ideology.

Correction: Nazis - and only nazis - often sing the first one.

Are you sure? I may be wrong, it wouldn’t be the first time, but I have the impression that people sing easily “Deutschland über alles”.

(For context, I never lived in Germany, but always near the border, so I have sometimes a distorted vision of what occurs there)

The first stanza is not officially banned but it’s only really sung by nazis or edgy teenagers.

Wow, it is refreshing to see someone recognize being mistaken, accept the correction, and be thankful to have learned something, so thank you as well.

Or maybe by old people accidentally because they learned it from their parents as the normal anthem when they were children.

Dude, please connect to some Germans that aren’t Nazis.

The “Horst-Wessel-Lied”, also known by its opening words “Die Fahne hoch”, was the anthem of the Nazi Party from 1930 to 1945. From 1933 to 1945, the Nazis made it the de-facto co-national anthem of Nazi Germany, along with the first stanza of the “Deutschlandlied”. The “Horst-Wessel-Lied” has been banned in Germany and Austria since the end of World War II.

Yes. But this politician sang the Deutschlandlied, not the Horst-Wessel-Lied.

I unfortunately saw the video on a shady French site when I searched for his name (here; you can click, but it’s not very interesting and you’ll have visited an alt-right website).

Ok I now see what you mean. Thanks for the link, unfortunately for some reason the video doesn’t play for me so I can’t hear it. Still in the article you linked they say he sung the nazi-era Deutschlandlied version, which includes the 2 first verses. The current version has only the third one.

Yeah I thought that the first stanza, while not official, was still often sung by normal people and not just by Nazis. Looks like I was wrong 😅
