Working with engineers, I can say that the inefficiency and excel worksheets are through the roof.

Yeah as an engineer, Iβll waste a week optimizing something that absolutely didnβt need it
... You can say I'm something of an engineer myself~

So... I take it you're not a fan of Rube Goldberg Machines?
Nah these are great! Very efficient in bringing joy
Only for entertainment not for practical. I actually feel a bit of sadness with all the work put into the design for such simple task. Like troubleshooting nightmare.
I imagine, for them, it's not about the 'simple task', its the journey.
Maybe The Marble Machine will cheer you up. I know it cheers me up. (I discovered Wintergatan in the pandemic... love their music. and he's still working on a new version of that thing.)
Yeah its 100% different mindset than "path of least resistance" or "Simple is simply better" that I normally go with. I know it brings them joy but every time I see dominoes fall it just invokes a sort of small sadness. Just sigh. I get the art behind it all but then again engineering is not about the art. That architecture terrortory lol.
I cannot believe that machine. Quite impressive.
From a mech engineering point of view, they are really good practice for understanding different aspects of practical physics and materials. (I. E. If this lever spins the ball CW, the ball will go here; spinning it CCW will make it go there. Having the ball go down a ramp make it goes fast that it jump over the hole, making it go down 10mm steps slows it enough to hit the target.)
Also a great way to get kids into engineering.
(Itβs for the kids. Honest!)
