Hard to believe. I’m surprised. They didn’t take the money and run and they actually just gave up on the game?
I imagine Valve probably doesn’t pay out right away. The article doesn’t say who is issuing the refunds but I am going to assume Valve is involved in it.
The current guess is that the scam was on investors, since the “dev company” paid the employees a salary for 5 years. Even if the investors try and reclaim any value from the company, individual employees paychecks cant be touched.
And since a game, technically, was released, they cant easily be sued for failing to deliver on a product. The product does exist. Its just ass.
Steam refunds the money, the team closes in shame, and the employees made an easy living for 5 years.
Good.
