This page has a nice list for anybody looking for alternatives to apps they used on other platforms.

Firefox, Vlc, Virtualbox, and many others are cross platform and new users can simply use the same app they’re used to.

But for some of the apps that aren’t cross-platform, here’s some of my favorite alternatives:

  • Mario Kart (various Nintendo consoles) -> SuperTuxKart (Linux and I think Windows too)
  • Notepad++ (Windows) -> sublime_text (Linux/Mac/Windows)
  • Paint.net (Windows) -> pinta (Linux)
  • Photoshop (Windows/Mac) -> gimp (Linux/Mac/Windows)
  • TrueCrypt / VeraCrypt -> zulucrypt, veracrypt
  • WinMerge (Windows) -> meld (Linux)
  • Xpadder -> antimicrox

    Onedrive/Gdrive/icloud -> SyncThing

    Cross-platform. Your data is your data. Your devices sync the data between themselves. Can be used for synced folders or backup. Although it’s intended use is file syncing it can be used for basic backup too. Options allow for file versioning and one can also backup to their friends device using password protection. However there’s no hosted website for ones files if that’s needed.
