I just got a ban for “encouraging violence”. Someone asked “what will you do to celebrate when he dies?” Someone else started talking about how they have a fantasy about getting the death note and how they’d put that to use. I chimed in with my silly fantasy of using a seance to end politicians’ careers by getting them possessed by the ghost of GG Allin, and enjoying the mayhem that would ensue.

So, anyway, right after that, I found out that all the people who were so transgressive to have actually liked that comment of mine can, as of a couple days ago, expect punishment as well. How draconian.

And so that was that. No sense in being lorded over on the internet by the same people who run HOAs. It’ll be fun watching Reddit flush itself down the toilet from over here, I expect.

My final straw with Reddit was a year ago, with an r/askreddit question, “Now that the Supreme Court has given Presidents immunity, what’s the funniest thing Biden could do?” I answered, “Shoot Donald Trump.” I caught a strike for inciting violence, appealed it, and got a clearly automated reply upholding the strike. Made a Lemmy account that day and never looked back.

There’s definitely a change in the air. I’ve been downvoted to hell for the last week saying and doing the exact same things I’ve been saying and doing the entire time, making jokes at the expense of celebrities and being snarky in political subs. For some reason this week joking about how DJ Khalid doesn’t go down on women and offering non-destructive pro-tips for deflating tires is worth a bunch of downvotes.

I haven’t been banned from many reddit communities yet, but I’ve seen the news about them banning upvotes for comments about italian plumbers and I decided it was time to look elsewhere.

Hi! I started reading about Lemmy over the weekend and made my account today.

I came over to Lemmy a few days ago. I had still been using Boost for Reddit. Somehow my app was still working, but I finally got shut off a few days ago. I can’t handle the promoted posts on the reddit app. I’m at peace with advertisements but the promoted posts were too confusing/distracting for me to comfortably browse.

I came here when all the API drama happened, and I didn’t even use third party apps, I just decided that I didn’t want to help make that greedy little pig boy any money. Even still, I’m actually shocked that they’ve cracked down this hard. It’s hard to take serious, because it seems like they would destroy their userbase with this, but they’re doing it.

I also came here when all the API drama happened. I also checked out Sqabblr, which had a different name at first. There wasn’t much here and I was confused by the fediverse. I went on Facebook and that was a hot mess of garbage.

I went back to Reddit recently and it’s noticeably worse - probably a combination of chasing away great mods and our world just being what it is makes for people being awful at each other rather than at problems.

I’ve just come back here this weekend and there seems to be more resources to help me understand the nature of the fediverse. Ideally I won’t be back to Reddit.

Sorry to ramble, hope you have a great week!

Squabblr’s the one where the owner wuickly outed himself as a right-wing transphobe and caused a mass-exodus of early adopters, wasn’t it?

If that happened I missed it. There was never much traffic so I rarely checked it. The participants never came off as intolerant.

Yeah, the vibe was definitely left-wing before, and it was a shock to many of the more prominent members. You started getting the appearance of subs which were “this is to discuss how Jews control all the money globally” and prominent members who avoided saying anything completely explicit on the site, but whose twitter accounts would reveal them to be prominent members of swastika-using Nazi groups.

The owner declared himself to be “a free speech absolutist” and that he wanted to promote conflict on the site and a lot of people, myself included, just went “yeah, I see where this is going” and left.

I’ve no idea if they’ve changed course again. I went there out of curiosity after this post but it’s all hidden behind a log in screen and i couldn’t be arsed to sign up or try to remember or find my credentials.

But since you don’t really want to hide your content if you’re small and trying to grow, I’m going to assume that it’s insular and doesn’t want people to stumble on its content.

forgot my old login to here so made a new one, but my reddit got banned for 3 days for “violent threats” after talking about Luigi in r/europe.

reddit chose their side. goodbye reddit and twitter, hello Lemmy and Bluesky.

It’s important to recognize that these changes to reddit, like inserting more ads, banning subreddits, shutting down the public API and excessive restriction of expression around Luigi, are partly a result of pressure from the people who own reddit, the financial backers, who are the kind of owning-class mega-rich who are threatened by the idea of Luigi.

BlueSky is also ultimately beholden to venture capitalists, it’s only a matter of time before they must start making back that money by appeasing the owner class and following their demands. So, like others have recommended, I recommend trying to find a good Mastodon site if there’s one that suits you. Just like Lemmy, it’s a federated group of sites which can share content with each other.

I’ve already given mastodon a shot, functionally it felt more like Tumblr. aside from that, Mastodon did not get picked up by the artist community that used to inhabit Twitter. the UI and layout is much the same, things are about where we expect them to be, and it’s not a complete format change in the way that Mastodon is.

what a lot of people wanted was the old Twitter back, with no more AI or Elon, and a functional block system. that’s why Bluesky started to take off where Mastodon and Hive didn’t.

maybe this guy will turn out the same way Twitter did, there’s no way to know for sure. for now though, it’s what people wanted, and it’s certainly what I wanted. small artists and creators don’t use Mastodon because it’s much harder to get outreach on there, you have to specifically join communities and follow server groups on their to expand your feed, and it’s just overall a different layout that doesn’t make it inviting to transfer from Twitter.

most people that were on old Twitter don’t want an alternative social media to Twitter, they just want old Twitter.

Keep in mind, a couple of instances including lemmy.world have removed what they consider calls to violence when it comes to Luigi. So general support will be fine, but if you ever end up crossing a line, remember that there are plenty of other instances which allow you to say: Brian Thompson had it coming, kill the billionaires, hang Musk in the town square, and the only thing wrong with doing a Luigi is that random acts of terror against the owner class just aren’t sustainable (see Propaganda of the Deed assassinations in the late 1800s/1900s), you need an organized movement to support this kind of action.

Yeah. I’ve definitely has comments censored, but only in .world.

        Reasons:-

        • Politeness
        • Civility
        • Propo

I was also banned there for refusing to get into an argument with a Mod.

…I don’t see how that makes sense. What’s communist or socialist about an HOA? If anything, HOAs are capitalists trying to force property values to increase by using crappy anti-social laws.

Incidentally, communism for libertarians might be libertarian socialism or anarcho-communism, which both predate the US right-wing Libertarian ideology and instead actually focus on everyone’s liberty.
