Summary

Ontario Premier Doug Ford warned that Canada could cut electricity exports to the U.S. in retaliation for Donald Trump’s new tariffs on Canadian goods.

The U.S. imposed a 25% tariff on most Canadian imports, citing border security concerns. Ford emphasized that U.S. states like New York and Michigan rely on Canadian energy and should “feel the pain.”

Canadian officials also announced $155 billion in counter-tariffs.

If enacted, energy restrictions would likely raise prices in the U.S., escalating trade tensions between the two countries.

I agree with the sentiment but those states are all pretty blue. Trump might just let it happen to widen the divide and somehow claim that it’s punishment for not bending the knee.

Secession is a nice idea, but merging into Canada is a nonstarter.

Canada is 40 million people, New York is 20 million. That kind of influx would be insane to manage. And that’s just one state…

I can only think of east/west Germany as the closes parallel and they are still merging the halves.

I agree. I think we’d be better off supporting their new independent nation[-states?] than absorbing them. Too many systemic issues and too large of a population to change overnight, not to mention all the guns. Maybe we could accept Hawaii, I think they’re far enough removed from the continental states.

That’s some weird logic. Trump enacts tariffs on Canada, who retaliates in kind, so you’re worried about blue votes. Trump may claim that after the fact, but he’s definitely not playing chess that many moves ahead.

          Trump enacts tariffs on Canada.

Exactly. Trump. Not the states that voted against him. If you want to retaliate, retaliate against Trump. Make him, and the people that voted for him feel the pain.

Look at the things he’s doing domestically. There’s nothing he and his MAGA dipshits love more than sticking it to the blue states. So, Canada doing something that predominantly hurts blue states isn’t going to hurt Trump at all. Quite the contrary, it’s going to give him huge hard-on.

So, if your goal is to help Trump, well then carry on.

Cutting off power in blue states will mean that the energy has to come from somewhere else, which means higher demand, and higher costs across multiple states, also red ones.

I’m curious, is there somewhere you can see votes broken down by county, or preferably more granular than that? I remember seeing an article a month ago about one of those small Alaskan panhandle towns that relies on its bigger BC neighbour town. They were begging the BC/Canadian government to take it easy on them because they didn’t vote for this but the article immediately fact checked them with an Alaskan government stat showing that town in particular voted something like 80% for Trump. My point is, I’ve been hearing a lot from both Point Roberts and Port Angeles and I’m curious if they’re full of shit or not.

Definitely not. Port Angeles has a major ferry service going back and forth to Victoria. I love that ferry ride - you often get to see grey whales on the trip, and god damn, Vicky is just one of the most beautiful cities. I love it so much. I wish I could move there.

I’m not sure this gets granular enough. I don’t think that the upper peninsula is as blue as this map suggests, seeing as when I was there before the election, it was just littered with Trump signs. https://bestneighborhood.org/conservative-vs-liberal-map-washington/

Far be it from me to suggest a Fox site, but this also breaks it down: https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/wa-county-voted-president

Anyhow, the GOP voters will, in the words of the inimitable Ricky from Trailer Park Boys, “cut off their nose for spiderface.”

those states are all pretty blue.

Minnesota is. Michigan tends to be (especially now that our districts are drawn independently), but we voted for Trump as a state. And New York is mostly red except for NYC.

I almost want to see our power bills skyrocket in Michigan. But at the same time I know full well the dipshits who voted red (including my own family) will blame everyone else before they blame the people who might end abortion. So it won’t matter. They won’t learn. Instead we’ll all suffer because of their idiocy and they’ll continue to think that we’re winning.

(In fact they’ll be thrilled because it will mean increased oil and natural gas production to close the gap in demand.)

The Rich™ want to buy the dip and buy up property (see project 2025). They need the economy to break but not to completely collapse. And then it will “bounce back” enough that they can transfer their USD to other currencies.

Whether trump’s fucking stupidity will accomplish that seems REAL questionable.

That said: Massive power outages (also, this is just the equivalent of a state governor with a crackhead brother saying it to appear strong to Canada’s conservatives) might be what this country needs to get out en masse in places other than the blue states.

    (Copy-pasting from another thread)

    I like Cory Doctorow’s plan.

The reason Canada got tariff-free access to sell to the US in the first place? Canada agreed to enforce penalties for tampering with digital locks, following the premise of the Digital Milennium Copyright Act.

If the US is going back on the deal, then Canada should too. Make it legal to jailbreak all US tech.

    Doctorow advocating for this plan:

You people are fucked up. Literally brainwashed. This is what happens when people are trained from birth to be afraid of empathy so they never have to experience the pain of others. The dichotomy here isn’t whether or not to cut off power, it’s whether or not to do it in a planned way that permits people to not actually fucking die.

Hospitals have their own backup generators and so do lots of schools. Communities can band together to set up shelters. If Americans choose not to save Americans from the consequences of American actions, that’s on them. Don’t believe for a second that your lecturing on empathy has any weight whatsoever. You’re preaching to the empathetic. We all just found out that there’s a limit and a breaking point to being sorry for people finding out after they fucked around.

The only people who are dying are those who are trying to defend their country from a mad man intent on concurring them and those who are fighting in support of that mad man’s goal. Ukraine does not want to bow down to Putin’s tyranny. Putin should leave Ukraine to the Ukrainians, then the killing can stop.

Trudeau got in front of the cameras today and spelled this out. Our government chose to take this action, and Canada is having an entirely reasonable response. Once the tarrifs end, we can go back to where we were, but in the meantime, Americans need to learn how much they rely on Canadian trade and need to understand that this is entirely our government’s fault.

This!! This should have been the very first thing! Retaliatory tariffs hurt the consumers, companies and so the economy overall. Reversing the insane IP laws that prevent people from modifying, repairing, upgrading their American products would open business opportunities and lower costs for Canadians.

The main issue is the benefit will be seen on medium term, not days/weeks, and if it is under threat to be reversed again as soon as Trump backs down on his tariffs, not many will take the risk to invest in the maintenance and repair sector.

Exactly. The entire reason Trump is President again is because we did not take the serious extreme and required actions after the 2020 elections to ensure that him, his supporters, and enablers could never participate in American society again.

The same mistake we made after the civil war we decided that we would be generous and go easy on those who betrayed us. We are still paying for that mistake we are still paying for the mistake with Trump. The only thing fascist understand is violence in the only way fascism ends is through violence.

All I’ve seen from Ontario is Ford saying he’ll kick America’s ass metaphorically but is there anything in place to protect the local jobs that’d be lost if they were to cut off all that electricity?

There’s some truth to Chinas claim that they’re still a developing country and they need to massively build out to bring more of their population up to developed standards.

There’s also some truth to the claim that central planning without regard to supply and demand means they seem to be building out more power than they can use. Hopefully that translates into coal power plants going unused

I don’t know what that is so can’t be offended, but don’t be blinded by the lies rolling agenda that any country is bad: even the worst regimes sometimes do good things

What does “high speed rail” and “BEV buses” have to do with the discussion about renewable energy?

Everything. Renewable energy is not just renewable electricity generation but applying it to more energy users. A Deisel bus is a dirty polluter that can’t use renewable energy, but a battery electric bus is a way to use renewable energy for transportation.

One of the fundamental requirements of more renewable energy is “electrify everything”. Electricity becomes the distribution medium letting us use renewable energy for more things

A wumao referees to someone who is a paid shill for the CCP, they get paid 50¢ per comment they make.

Renewable energy is not just renewable electricity generation but applying it to more energy users. A Deisel bus is a dirty polluter that can’t use renewable energy, but a battery electric bus is a way to use renewable energy for transportation.

Sure, that’s a valid point. But it becomes entirely invalidated when you consider that most of that electrification comes from coal plants they’re building at breakneck pace. They’re averaging two entire coal power plants per week. That’s over 100 coal fired power plants per year. They are building more than ALL other countries combined.

Then there’s the consideration that your argument only applies to the very few places they can actually do that, like in major urban cities. Everywhere else in the country they still have to rely on ICE transport out of practicality.

And this also ignores that their renewable initiatives (outside of EVs) are giant shams.

Let the southern bastards freeze in the dark…not permanently, just a brief period, followed by an export tax. Cut power once in March, then again throughout the NBA playoffs in April.

At this point we should do this whether or not Trump reverses course. Make it clear there is nothing he can do to avoid it.

I’m sick of this market fuckery back and forth. I’m convinced he’s trying to depress the Canadian dollar and the value of Canadian companies and industries, so that oligarchs in the US can buy them up. It’s a hostile corporate takeover of our country. Fuck him, we need to go hard - permanent tariffs as long as Trump is in office…and we need legislation to ensure 51% Canadian ownership of strategic resources, as well as no American investment right now. If necessary, we need to nationalize strategic resources and industries.

What we don’t need is a fucking tax break for the rich. We’re on a war footing right now and our leaders need to accept this. The people have largely accepted it.

I don’t think he actually cares about Canada specifically. The point is to alienate the US from its allies and reduce any kind of powerful diplomatic mediators or military deterrents so Russia and similar traditionally colonial powers can just start seizing whatever territory they want.

I think there are two things he wants here…and by “things he wants” I mean things that will make him and/or his wealthy oligarch buddies rich and grow their power.

The first and more near-term goal is the upcoming tax cuts for the rich, which will be trillions of dollars. To fund this, he sees at least three vehicles, that he has been pushing despite the failings of all three: (1) savings from DOGE, (2) the new gold visas, and (3) tariff income. All of these ideas are absolutely dogshit for creating income, but he seems to think they will. In his previous time in office, he even tried to use tariffs in this way. He sees tariffs as income and he’s made it clear. He knows the tax cuts will be hugely unpopular so he has to build up a story as to how they can be afforded. In the meantime if a bunch of rich short sellers make money off of market manipulation, so much the better.

The second goal, and probably more in line with the objectives of the oligarchy in the US as a whole, is to make Canada even more subservient economically to the US. They want a quiet corporate takeover of Canada. They want to depress the value then but it all up, after which we’re even more fucked than we are now. We need to cut this option off and just accept that we need to nationalize these industries, and restrict or even exclude American investment. I think the Canadian government should own at least 51% of key strategic resources, such as telecom, oil, hydro, potash, and media.

In summary, the Americans are now our enemies and should be considered as such. They want to damage our country and assume control of it. They are outright saying this. We need to stop being so fucking naive, and take solid action to prevent it.

So Trump is not acting based on goals he has for the US, he is acting on goals for the global oligarchy, doesn’t matter if you’re a Canadian or US billionaire he wants you to be able to continue exploiting.

If putting Canada under the jurisdiction of a more compliant country like the US makes that easier great, if instead the conservative parties in Canada can be propped up great. You have plenty of MAGAs in Canada, They’re not just in the US, so we all could do some house cleaning. The US is just the cautionary tale.

In Spanish, as far as I know, “americano” = inhabitant of the American continent, “estadounidense” = person from the US, so I don’t think Mexicans would be offended at the first, at least not in Spanish.

I’m just fed up with the constant sensational shock fake news (usually of right wing parties), which only aim for fear, anger and hatred

Yeah, we all have problems and we need to work on that. That’s pretty much life - especially social life and much more (geo-) political life.

But I can’t stand the rhetoric anymore. From highschool bullies playbook to imitating Hitler’s rhetoric. I’m just too fed up with it.

I want fact based politics and crowd sourced solutions - from the people that are actually affected.
And not some idiot calling a whole group of people degenerates and worth shit.

In the late 90s with the “real” Internet still alive and all of the people starting to face global problems, I was really optimistic, that this would bring us all together.
To work on a global solution.
But nah, we need to have populistic simple “solutions” for complex problems, where seemingly every time it’s just the fault of some minority group or some foreigners.

This now just isn’t the world I wanted to live in and I naively hoped for so much better and more…

Edit: to make extend on that:
Society doesn’t need a rigid framework of rules to live in. So fuck social control - doesn’t matter if it comes from religion or from state.
The laws we live in should reflect the society we currently are. And not try to pressure society into some form of ideological picture.
And with that, fuck ideology as well.

Society is always changing and our rules to live by need to be as flexible as that.
But somehow people still long for a wannabe strongman leader, who only cares for himself.

We could just build our own society, with basic democracy, no real leaders, but maybe just elected representatives.
We don’t need anyone to tell us, how we should behave.
We hopefully are grown up enough to see the ethical correct way.

But people seem to prefer to be childs and just hand over responsibility…

Unfortunately, ideology is like halitosis: it’s always someone else’s problem. Showing how a position is “allowing you to participate in your own oppression” (my definition of ideology) can seem impossible or require great skill.

Emotionally, a lot of people seem to need a leader not a representative. I wonder how much is culture and ideology, and how much is evolutionary.

We like sweets, too, and learn to do without. I believe we can do the same by suppressing leaders and thus managing the Sociopath in Power problem.

I just don’t know how a grown up and educated human can still look for a leader in its life

I’m in favour of a primus inter pares concept, so I do get, that I give off responsibility in some parts of my life to people, who just do it better.
Like, I’m not really good with mechanical stuff, others are. So it’s better that they do it.
But I’m rather good with computer stuff, so we help each other out.

I just don’t see the need for a kindergartner in a society of grown ups.

Problem is, that we’re currently lacking education in quite some parts, so many people never really get to actually grow up and need to rely on other people, because they never knew better.
This sounds a bit derogatory, but that’s the only way I can image, why people want to have a “strong” leader above them - they just don’t want to take responsibility.

Because many people in the US (and elsewhere, sadly) are not media-literate enough to understand the difference between the veracity of an article and their opinion about it.
