@Yondoza Well, it’s the 1st day of Schengen, so maps with legends are likely to come later. This was the first up-to-date map I found, on Wikipedia.
But if you want, here’s a quick legend:
- Dark blue: Schengen and EU members
- Light blue: European microstates that maintain open or semi-open borders with other Schengen member countries (de facto Schengen members)
- Yellow: Schengen, but not EU members
- Orange: Working to implement later (EU) (currently just one remaining - Cyprus)
- Red: Common Travel Area (EU & Non-EU)
When was the UK a part of the Schengen area?

While Cyprus only has not implemented the Schengen agreement yet, Ireland isn’t part of the Schengen area at all (opt out). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Agreement
@AI_toothbrush They are not in Schengen because the UK is out of the EU. If Ireland had been in Schengen, there would be a hard-border between it and Northern Ireland.
They weren’t in Schengen before Brexit either, they had the “Common Travel Area” with the UK. Not sure what changed for after.
AfaIk, the freedom of travel between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland is part of the peace deal. So whatever protocol is in power now, needs to ensure this. Thus, as UK is no longer part of EU, in principle, there should be border controls between Northern Ireland and Britain.
