    Why only temporary? Seems nicer than the bare stone both functionally and aesthetically.

      Wood requires repair and replacing more often - especially when under enemy fire during a siege. No sense in investing the labor and materials except when it’s needed.

        It’s thought the hoardings were designed to be prefabricated and stored in peace time. It’s not like you could count on getting the lumber during a siege after all.
