alt-text for thumbnail: text saying “blocking fascists is self-care” next to an antifascist flag on a 2d digital art wooden background

edit:

reactionaries in the comments, look at that. Not surprising since this place downvotes everything related to queer and disabled people, I suggest yall find somewhere else to hang out. I got a discord server if anyone is interested

"Never argue with an idiot. They will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience" - Winston Churchill or Abraham Lincoln (probably)

"Arguing with an idiot is like playing chess with a pigeon. It'll just knock over the pieces, shit on the board and strut about like it's won anyway."

Just to play devils advocate: Daryl Davis. A black man who has convinced over 200 members of the KKK to quit, by having civil conversations with them.

Edit: he directly convinced something like 50, but estimates more than 200 have quit because of his efforts

that is not online, the circumstances are very different. This also doesn't stop them from doing fascism, it just changes what fascism they do. I am not sure the impact of that is all too great

it probably just convinces them to focus on attacking disabled people, women, queer people, etc

If you assume failure at the outset, you guarantee it.

if you assume everything you could try will succeed you will be found dead at the bottom of a cliff

there is a difference between guaranteed failure and efficiency as well

from this comment my assumption is that you didnt watch the video. I think you should probably focus on context before jumping into a conversation

hmm yes, talking to this person who has differing political options from me is going to literally kill me

[–] bigmclargehuge@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I didn't mean to imply it was a 1-1 comparison. I just used it as an example of a situation where a person or group of people were taking part in something really terrible, and were talked out of it by someone who was actually willing to take the time, and put in the effort. It can work. Not saying it always will in every situation, but it can.

Cool but what your want is more people believing your ideology, so it's strategically best to convert and understand. Ignore and block is a losing strategy.

[–] RosethornRangerTTV@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

there are many non fascists willing to be "converted", only targeting those least likely to join is the losing strategy lol

I've had numerous ideological and political deltas in my life, so I know it's possible.
