So, I preordered the Light Phone 3? I considered the 2 for a while but it is just to clunky with its eink screen, texting would be a nightmare.
What are y’all’s thoughts on the new design? Do you think minimalist phones are worth it?
$400 ?! Way, what, no, base price $800 !!! Interesting niche product, but come on…
800 is a hard pill to swallow. They said that price will likely come down. I don’t feel like 400 is too much for a phone.
$400 is too much for a Light Phone. The whole purpose of is to be minimalistic…
I’m cool with that price considering the thoughtful design and projected longevity of the phone. I’m not trying to convince you buy this. It is niche and meets what I am looking for and the price is fair to me.
It’s an interesting product. I would be interested to read your comments about it in the future.
Gladly!
Love to see it, I want more phones like this, idk I almost want a Light Phone with a microSD card slot for music/documents/files.
I know that goes against the whole super simple, less is more theme. However. I like options & I think every single phone should have expandable memory. Even Apple. When that feature isn’t present in a smartphone, that is the company ripping you off.
The ability to take pictures & store them on a microSD card. Back up your phone, files & settings. Anything you want…and that phone can consequently fail or be destroyed, but you extract that card & you’ve got what you need? That feature is cheap to implement, that security is priceless. And that is what companies have stolen from all of us.
…anyway. Other than that, the 3 looks great. Love the small form factor & everything about it. I’m almost willing to buy it, anyway. I’m sad they don’t have microSD, I am disappointed but I’m not surprised.
Why not a Punkt for less money? Or a Nokia for a lot less money.
I really don’t get these things. They say nothing about security, privacy, or updates on their site.
You want basic functionality for cheap, that’s the updated Nokia from 20 years ago. You want a decent modern phone with security, privacy, updates, and black and white icons? Get a Pixel, put GrapheneOS on it and download Articons.
This thing is a mashup of a candy bar phone and a 15 year old iPod, but unlike those things you can’t actually buy one, you need to prefund the company and wait another 7 months.
I can’t speak for everyone, but the lightphone can be a wifi hotspot. That’s a feature that makes it more attractive to me. I would get a minimalist phone to avoid carrying distractions around with me, but I would still want to be able to get online via a tablet or laptop.
Edit: I hadn’t looked at the punkt phones, but they also can be a wifi hotspot.
Can’t use it until it supports Signal, so that’s a no from me, dog.
Would be nice, it’s a possibility in the future they stated.
I was interested in the lightphone ii because of its small size and eink display. Now its just a big phone with a normal screen like every other.
At this point they might as well just release their os rom so you can get the lightphone expierence without having to buy new hardware.
It’s the size of two credit cards it’s still pretty small.
