I have a problem with tech scanning my kids’ faces. This is weird and invasive. I will decide what is appropriate for my kids, and provide guidance where possible. Stop trying to parent my kids.
In the article, the ESRB spokesperson repeatedly clarifies that the tech is used for parents. If a child tries to sign up for an online service, they provide a parental email and the parent takes a selfie to be evaluated and cleared by the AI.
Still a disgusting intrusion capable of massive exploitation, but they’re not trying to get a picture of your kid.
Seriously, everything about this can fuck right off.
I also wanna know what the financial motivation is here. How long before this gets uses to charge a fee for every unique player that uses a game? Or will this just help with targeting ads at specific kids?
This is fucking stupid and a massive invasion of privacy.
This is a shocking example of where we’ve gotten to in terms of latent disregard for privacy and complacency with corporations having far too much of your data.
The fact that this is even in debate as acceptable is very telling.
Completely ridiculous and should not even be a question. In my own lifetime we went from “parents ultimately need to make sure their underage children aren’t playing M-rated games” to “now we’re in a spot where we can scan your children, collect that data, potentially do whatever we want with that data, and paint it like we’re helping you as a parent block content to your child”. And people will eat it up.
ESRB wants to take forced pictures of children in private
FTFY
Should be pretty easy to fake it.
